Situation: A trough preceded by strong northerlies is moving northeast over the country and is expected to cross central New Zealand today, followed by a narrow ridge of high pressure. A northerly flow develops over the region on Thursday ahead of another trough, which should move onto the North Island on Saturday, followed by a southwest flow.

Wednesday: Northerly rising to 35 knots gusting 55 knots this morning, then easing to 25 knots gusting 35 knots early afternoon and to northwest 20 knots this evening. Changing southwest 10 knots tonight. Rough sea becoming very rough this morning, then easing to rough early afternoon, moderate this evening and slight tonight. Poor visibility in rain developing this morning, clearing this afternoon.
Outlook:
Thursday: Becoming northerly 15 knots in the morning, rising to 20 knots in the afternoon. Fine.
Friday: Northerly rising to 25 knots. Rain developing.
Saturday: Becoming southerly 25 knots. Rain, easing to a few showers later.
