Nothing there about the one shown North of East Cape! What was that all about?

Seems like they are spreading out right along our Eastern coast line, there must be some big Pacific plate movements going on!

Hmmm, combine all the known geological science and Ken Ring's theories of planet alignment effects and we could be in for a bit more excitement yet!

Having more water than the Wellington harbour holds just sitting above our house and held back by a man made earth dam doesn't fill me with confidence when there are strong earth tremors about!

I have always known the odds on that one because studying the effects of such an event was part of my job!

Moving to higher safe ground is possible providing you are able to move at the time but as many Christchurch people found "moving" is not so easy under those conditions!

I don't think Ken Ring is scaring anyone, he is simply voicing an opinion

I can see a threat to our safety but like all the other lemmings I wont do anything about it so will stay where I am and take the risk!

We do need a better warning system in case of dam break though, the whole valley needs that! (IMHO)

In ways I really hope we don't, but the fact that we're learning next to fuck all from our disasters, really does push me in the opposite direction

Earth dam's are less likely to fall to bits in an earthquake than a concrete dam if I remember correctly. I'd be worried about that fucken Waitaki bastard to be honest, wouldn't be freakinig about the Haka bridge anymore if that critter went......

It just shows how ALL of New Zealand is thinking about the Christchurch quakes.
The nightly parade of dump trucks roared past our place last night and shook the house as per normal. it woke us up and we both thought the same thing.

Putting out Wellington tremor into perspective.

Chch quake = 6.3
Wgtn quake = 4.5

Christchurch's quake was 63 (yup - that's right) 63 times stronger than Wellington's and released 500 times more energy!!!

You can work out how much more (or less) powerful 2 quakes are via:

Strength multipler = 10^quake A richter / 10^quake B richter
Energy multiplier = 31.6^quake A richter / 31.6^quake B richter

In other words, each order of magnitude greater (eg. a 5 to a 6) is 10 times stronger and releases 31.6 times the energy.

Of course - this is an epicentre measurement. When you consider the Chch quake was only 10k deep and approx 10k to the CBD - it's even worse than the above numbers relative to the population density.
