    Damn I can remember that quite clearly, Peter Read was a clever bugger, I also can remember he had an observatory of his own in his back yard.

    BASS beer came in cans and would take your eye out if you were'nt carefull, decimal currency came in in 1967 and confused a lot of older people.

    88297 was our number growing up in Palmmy, the Ekatahuna Kiwi was on top of the PDC building, the radio staion was 2ZA and there were three picture theatres, the Regent, the State and the Odeon....OMG time warp, I need a lay down..

    Mum drummed into us kids..."your phone number is 7589 if you get lost" we would wander from one end of the hutt valley to the other...the advent of a stopbank in Upper Hutt put our plans to camp out at McKurdy's castle on hold for a year...

    When I was a kid our 'phone number was 861M, our next door neighbour was 861S and the back neighbour was 861D.
    It was amazing the number of times we heard a 'click' while we were talking. The nosy old bitch next door would be listening in.

    I started in business in 1965 and got a line of my own, 5007, then they introduced 5 digit numbers so mine became 85007. Our STD code was 021 and that was added, (without the 0,) when the entire South Island went to 7 digits and adopted Chistchurch's STD of 03.

    Fond memories - 18 months in barracks there. Eggs and beans on toast for sunday brekkie from the Y for $2 bucks.
