What are these young'uns doing in a thread for oldies? Getting an education, maybe?
    Let's go the whole way....
Farthing (quarter penny) - dropped from circulation early 60's?
Ha'penny (half a penny) dropped from circulation around 1965?
    Penny
    Trupence (three penny coin)
    Sixpence
    Shilling (twelve penny coin)
    Florin (2 shillings)
Half Crown - dropped from circulation before I remember
Crown (5 shillings) - also dropped during the 60s
    1/2 pound note - 10 shillings
    1 pound note - 20 shillings
    2 pound note
    5 pound
    10 pound note
Note sure if there were higher denomination notes...

In 1967, we went metric, and values were simplified
    Penny - 1c coin
    Sixpence - 5c coin
    Shilling - 10c coin
    Florin - 20c coin
    Crown re-introduced as 50c coin
    1/2 pound - 1 dollar note
    1 pound - 2 dollar note

Items that were valued at 1/2 pound or more appeared to double in price...
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Like all Imperial systems, the money made no sense. But we did understand it somehow.

    Did we mention tuppence...?

    Or thruppence

    Or ha'penny

Or farthing. (1/4 of a penny!)

Ah, four 'dew-drops' for a farthing...

Oh, and I got ripped off by decimal currency.

One packet of chutty-gum costs tuppence. ergo you could by 6 packets for a shilling.

BUT when decimal currency came in they charged 2-cents for a packet, ergo you only got 5 packets for a 10 cents (a shilling), dang!

Edit: Oops, I see some of that mentioned at top of page, doh!

There were Sovereign (one pound) and half-Sovereign, but as these were gold (real gold) coins were very rarely in common use. They were British coins but legal tender here. The half-sov I had was about the size of a 5 cent piece. You quite often see sov coins made into mens signet rings (and they sell for a shitload more than 1 pound/2 dollars, too) eg http://www.trademe.co.nz/Jewellery-w...-353838200.htm
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
