    SV650 track hack

I got a '01 sv650 track hack, the sort of thing you can loan out when mates/girlfriends that wants to have a go at trackdays.
the problem is it seems to be restricted on speed or revs.
it has a 180kph speedo and seems to be hitting a speed limiter or rev limiter in top.
it could be a japanese import, restricted on the ecu, has anyone got a ecu from a nz market one i could borrow to try or has anyone heard of this before? i know some vtr thou's had a speed restricter in the speedo and this seems to be doing something similar.

You definitely DO have a Jap domestic market model.
Suzuki NZ brought a few of them in to NZ in 2000.
    They have smaller carbs, too.
    It's silver?
The headlight has a projector beam in it, and if I recall, only one side goes on dip

Pretty sure you can run the pink wire that comes out of the gear pos sensor to earth & it will go to full power

I'd do a few tests and some more research before arbitrarily grounding any wire, just in case you let the magic smoke out of something. Quite likely the mod is 100% safe, but hey you check things like this lest you eff it.

Perhaps the pink wire gets grounded while in top gear to provide some sort of limiter - in which case it would easy to verify this with a multimeter.

Basically you need to make the bike "think" that its in 4th gear. Once it knows its in 5th/6th it limits revs.

Its been a few years since i ran the old model & it was the pink to earth OR pink through a resistor. Do a google search to confirm.

P.S - if you need to know how to make BMW1000rr put out 202hp , ask Choppa....

I'd trust Glen's advice but if you want more research, these forums are good:

    UK: www.sv650.org
    US: svrider.com

PS: I have a 2003 (pointy EFI model) and fitted a timing retart eliminator. this isn't a speed derestrictor as such but eliminates retarding the timing in the first 4 gears. Net result is no change in top end speed (6th is 6th) but much smoother at low revs (eg. chugging along at idle @ 11kph in 1st). Handy for commuting.

    Cheers,
    David.

Is this the same bike a certain tallish Pom attempts to ride?

Hey, thanks for the many and various replies!

It did have a projector lamp but i took that off. and it's silver.

It does seem that it's a jap market model, I'll ground that pink wire and see what happens, how much smaller are the carbs and when it "goes to full power" how much lower is that than a nz market model?

i'd look on the svrider and svorg sites but i can't access them, it says my ip address is banned, i've never been on those sites before so i don't know how that happened.

This bike has been ridden by a tall loud pom, you can't trust those poms, i bet he broke it so he's got an excuse for not winning.

    hey, expert...
the jap domestic market SV650s are quite different to the "rest of world" ones.
I did have a Suzuki service manual for the '99-'02 SV 650... and there was no service information in it on the jap market bikes.
You can bet that they are limited to 180km/h.
Get hold of "Number One" on this site... her and her hubby have the service manual, and will no doubt be able to give you any specs you need on the open market SV

Then the TRE might be all you need. I bought mine off a guy on svrider.com. It does exactly as Glen describes - but comes in a nice package with compatible connectors. You just unplug the existing connector, and plug the TRE cable in-line.

Here is a post with pictures for the Mod Glen describes:
