Spare vehicle remote

I'm exasperated. I have a Toyota Prado 4x4 which has taken me and the family to various mountain places and for which I have an affection approaching that of the (late) Ducati. However mainly it's a taxi for my teenagers...

The ignition key has a chip in it which means copies won't work - but that's ok cos I'm a compulsive/obsessive with 3 original keys.

But the lock/unlock remote is in a separate fob ie. not on the key. Had 3...but they died. I've been manually locking etc for the past years but its a real pain: then I discovered a fob which still works, sellotape, aluminium foil and all.

A genuine Toyota part is very expensive and I think requires reprogramming the security system = new keys yadda yadda.

I've been goggling for a spare or replacement for days now but am bewildered. Anybody know where to go or what to do? Replace keys, no problem, but a fob...?

(All joking aside, I suspect this confusion could be part of my head injury)

getting a new fob shouldn't mean new keys.
The security system will need to be (re)set to recognise the new fob. A bit like with garage door openers where you reset the unit then have to press each remote so the unit can learn them.
not to fob you off but you could ask your local Toyota dealer what it would take with out committing to buying the new fob.
(sorry, I tried to avoid the awful pun but it got the better of me

agreed, new fob shouldn't mean new keys. I'd expect that the fob only controls the central locking whereas the key controls the immobiliser. If genuine fobs turn out to be ridiculously expensive then another, possibly cheaper option would be to have an after market alarm fitted, these connect to the central locking also and would solve your problem
