The ChCh quake was a shocker for NZ. Down south was childs play compared to the Japan shake up yet look at the loss and suffering Canterbury is going thru. Just goes to show how insulated we have been.

Has made me think, maybe I should get serious about a survival kit.

What staggers me the most is the force and the relentless speed in which the water moves.
How far inland has it reached?

11 kilometers apparently. That'll be up an estuary or river valley. Doubt damage has spread that far.

I heard some officials explaining that they'd told local coastal shipping to return to port. I sincerely hope they had more sense, the best place to be when a tsunami arrives is open ocean.

One thing I noticed while watching the video was, the places where it hit was all countryside. I wonder if it would've been less damaging if the terrain was elevated.

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

How do you mean 'terrain was elevated'? Do you mean the buildings etc?

Their is only a little bit of footage for a huge coastline from the TV stations. I fear their is lot more amcam footage to come. The scale & destruction is unbelievable.

A mate called a couple of hours ago, he was watching the tide on the Rawhiti side of the Bay move from high to low & back again in 10 minutes. Did this 3 times in an hour. High tide here today was lower than a low tide.

Ha sorry I still don't understand. Of course there would be less damage if the terrain was elevated, that seems blindingly obvious, so I was trying work out what you were on about.

Gives me an uneasy feeling watching the Japanese disaster.

My heart goes out to them.
