I use silicone-spray on my FXDXT and it sharpens up the black 'crackle' finish on the engine casings - only negative is that dust sticks to it and you get dirty hands if you touch the cases after spraying silicone on the motor and going for a ride.

The Tergo GoldRush handcleaner (yellow stuff) is incredibly good at getting gunk off. The only thing it wont remove is tar, everything else is history in just seconds. It's also cheap and available everywhere.
Been told it strips the paint?

I use it everywhere and never had a problem with it. Aaaaaabsolutely maaaaaaarvelous at getting wheel gunk off.

I wouldn't use the gritty stuff on glossy paintwork though. I'd love to try a general cleaning product that has the same active ingredient as the hand cleaner.

Just given the s100 Engine brightner a go, see how we go??

I was told a person used a citrus based degreaser on a Buell and it stripped the paint in blotches to the point where an insurance claim was made and the company concerned wrote the bike off.
