Gah! No you are NOT usually allowed to wander around public land 'tooled up' unless you have a hunting permit, you are in the army or the police or your name is Tame Iti ... Local DOC office would be the best place to ask.

Also, I'm not sure of the status now but you never used to be allowed shotguns, rimfire or gas operated (air rifles) in National Parks except under special conditions (you were a contracted pest control officer etc).

But I'd check before doing much wandering about 'tooled up' unless you like discussing urgent matters with excitable men in black overalls, flack jackets and impressive boots.

Well, (PEDANT ALERT) they will still muffle the muzzle blast, it is only the sonic boom of the bullet they don't muffle.
Next time you are out with a .22 that's silenced try this: fire two shots straight up in the air (in a safe direction of course!) using one subsonic bullet and one supersonic bullet, you won't really know the difference.
The sonic boom effect only works when there is a nearby surface i.e. the ground.
The animals don't hear the sound of the gunfire regardless is you use super or subsonic bullets but they MAY hear the sonic boom - not so bad if shooting across gullies as the bullet is not close to the ground.

yeah sitting in the butts of the firing range you can hear it crack thump as the bullets come over head and slam in to the bank.

I shoot across a gully behind my house.
My wife can't hear a thing on the other side of the house.
From a .22 your distintive crack is a slight pop at worst.
The same goes for a mates moderated 308,he down loads to around 2000fps,useing 30/30 projectiles, still above sub speeds, an you won't hear it at all if your both on oppersite sides of a ridge.
Of course they work best with sub's, but to say moderators ONLY work on subs is wrong, there's just so much more to it than that.
If that's not pedantic enough for you,we can always get togeather some time an bore the crap out of anybody silly enough to listen with ballistic theorys.
Havn't had a good 308 is best argument for a while now.

Goes without saying! I bought my Sako 308 lever-action new in 1973, cost me $239 back then and it's all I have ever needed from wallabys to thar, I know that rifle better than the back of my hand.

Got other rifles but the old Sako is my No1 gun.

This is going to change soon with the new Arms mmendment Act that is in select committee at present, so that air rifles over a certain velocity are classed as firearms.

1800fps for an air rifle is..unlikely unless it is something pretty special. That is supersonic speeds, and you start getting interesting effects with air through an orifice then. I can dig out the cronograph if you want to test it.

Hey Its like this model here http://www.crosman.com/site/listing/1218 with some really crazy springs in it, they stopped making it, it was one of the more/most powerful spring driven air-guns, they come out with 1300fps IIRC, I got is springed and the claimed to have put in an incredibly powerfull spring that would be able (being the keyword I guess) to push about 1800fps - but you know how stuff is exaggerated, but from experience I would say it would be about ~/+1500fps, I also shoved on a nice winchester scope on it 20X x 50mm.

All I know is it has better range than my old .22 (which was a hunk of crap, no one ever looked after it.).

I still want to go buy an winchester X2 Shotty, I had a wee play with one and fark! makes all my other tools looks lame.

Just remember that if you're planning on hunting in Nat Parks, you can't use a .22 anyway (or, I assume, a shotgun either). The best bet would be to get to know some local land owners who'd let you hunt their place.

Go for it with the possums though! If you pluck them you get about $3 each which works out really good considering it only takes a minute or two. You get lots more for the skins but I find it's way more of a hassle.

I think it's way too easy to get a gun licence at the mo! Anyone can whip up a lockable cupboard and get a mate and a family member to vouch for them. And you don't have to be a rocket scientist to pass the test.
