Part of the looting/not looting thing I suspect would go back to a sense of community. It would be easier to steal from others when you have an "us and them" mentality, like most criminal gang type people.

Culturally, the every man for himself/I'm alright stuff you attitude, might also lead people to more easily justify nicking things from others. Again, just my thoughts, I have no proof. Both Japan and NZ follow capitalist economic models, but the social structure of the Japanese strikes me as putting more emphasis on the communal, whereas NZ is more indivualistic.

B d'M, hope you can stay strong through all the shaking. That last aftershock was over 7, you were correct.

Thanks , and you are bang on about the community , the group , feeling is almost central to the Japanese mind , you watch , ask a jap for their opinion , and they will instantly look at the others to check and gauge what should be said

They are generally Buddhists. To them stealing from other people is the same as stealing from yourself. Vandalizing other peoples property is the same as vandalizing your own. A silly thing to do. Too bad so many morons are wandering around in NZ with no clue, and do not see the harm that their own crimes bring to themselves.
