Too late to avoid the temptation....now I have a slightly unhealthy obsession. Someone needs to buy that thing so that I can get it out of my mind!
Re: Subaru comment, same thing could go for an Evo as for the Sti. Could get a mint condition model of either for ~$40k, chuck $20k in mods and it will outperform the RS4 any day of the week and cost less to maintain. HOWEVER...it really doesn't matter because but it is kinda like comparing a GSXR1000 to a Ducati Desmocedici RR.
Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.
It takes a big man to cry...and an even bigger man to laugh at that man.
If you have a fast bike why would you buy a fast German s/w with a turbo for 110k! Are you nuts! That's is a really bad economical decision to make.
Think of it this way.
1 Years of Insurance for 110k car ~2-3k
Annual depreciation in years 1,2,3 is 40k,20k,10k respectively.
So will you get ~42k of enjoyment in the first year?
Where as a Subaru station wagon bought for 10k will cost ya ~2k...
Yea i kinda agree with this....It's all about economics for me when it comes to cars. Used to buy top line gear only to find all my money was being lost. Invest in housing for long term now and it seems to work a whole lot better. Don't even have a wish list for fancy cars nowadays.
Trumpydom!
No turbo on the RS4, all NA V8 power.
Your depreciation stats are correct for accountancy when writing the book value off, however not for real life. A residual value of $39k after 3 years is about $25k low.
However, it is not always about economics and implicit/explicit costs. When I was younger I always compared vehicles with bang for buck and as I said before, a tin can with a potent 4cyl turbo motor such as an Evo has as much to offer, but drive the Evo then the RS4 and then tell me which one you would take.

Call me unwise or "uneconomical" or "Earth destroyer" but I'd take that 324g/km CO2 pumping German beast than a Subaru (if I have the money that is).
Screw depreciation. That's what riches (wealth) are for eh?
If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.
Subaru wagon vs Audi RS4 Avant? That's like comparing Ms Venezuela and Doris from the bingo hall. You could get your rocks off with either one but jeezus, how is that even a choice? Higher entry and maintenance cost but worth every blardy penny....or peso.
But if I have to explain then you're never gonna geddit.....so enjoy Doris, she's all yours!
But Doris from the bingo hall one day might have been Mrs Venezuela?
From my point of view there is nothing special about it. It's not fast compared to your bike, you can't say you have the fastest s/w because the 18yr old down the street has 15 turbos in his 1980s legacy, you can't just treat it as a normal s/w because you'll be scared of scuffing the expensive leather. It's all a bit pointless. Only place I can really see it on the side of Ponsonby road by some coffee shop with all the other A3s and s4s etc
It's not always about being fast. Like you say, got the bikes for that. If it were about the speed, why would an entrepreneuer spend $500k on a Lamborghini LP640 when an out of the box high end sports bike is going to give the same thrill for under $50k? The answer is more than dollars/kph.
To me, the RS4 is a thing of beauty, I love the way it looks, sounds, drives etc. It is like a piece of art. What use is spending $110k on a painting that sits on my wall when I can spend $110k on a car that I enjoy looking at AND driving?
If you don't get it yet, you ain't gonna!
