The farmers in America still do this. Was watching an episode of "Dirty Jobs" and they made Mike Rowe do it. Didn't think anything of it, farmer said it was the easiest way, and farmers sure know how to best "tend" to their stock... specially if they're yanks.

Personally I don't see a problem with what they were doing or how they did it....not my first choice of species, but each to their own I suppose
