If you put an R18 rating on that I highly doubt an 18+ year old is all of a sudden going to think that beastiality or child rape is ok because of a game. Do you think that if you played a game like that you would all of a sudden become a paedophile? That is just insulting to the intellect of adults.
On the other hand, if you've got someone with that sort of ... tendancy... playing that sort of game would encourage those fantasy's, and then they'd be drawn into making it a reality.

It's the way some people go from peeping tom's to stalkers to serial rapists. It's not saying every peeping tom turns into a serial rapists, but some do.

Having said all that shite, I don't like complete censorship as a rule, I love GTA et, I just think there's gotta be a limit somewhere, and that somewhere should be anything involving kids inappropriatly.

So you don't know? You don't know if it'll be the tipping point for some people, and until you do, then why take the risk?

Surely the point of a simulation is to simulate reality as best it can?

The technicality is, any "tribunal" is a NOT a court of law, and you can decline consent for them to make any ruling about you.

What is more concerning, is they may bully ISPs into following along with their rules and they might cut off your service. They do not need your consent for this, although you might be able to swing breach of contract proceedings against your ISP if they terminate your service for some reason that is not in your contract with them.

In the end, one ISP will stand up to them and they will get all the business, and then the others will capitulate.

There are also plenty of workarounds, and serious downloaders will have already be implementing these for some time.

What, so better 99.9% of the normal population have their lives regulated, just to protect the 0.1% of crazies out there that will just get set off by a different trigger? Pffft.

But in the end it is only a simulation. You know that while you are playing it.

Someone could just as easily be tipped over the edge when their mother tells them to go clean up their room. Psychotic behaviour is psychotic behaviour and you don't regulate society to keep them in the closet. If someone is suceptible to that kind of behaviour you try and find them before they do something. Not control their entire environment so they can live a normal life while thinking sick sadistic thoughts and possibly being randomnly tipped over the edge by any kind of stimuli.

People could get tipped over the edge watching shows like Dexter just as easily, it's all relative. And a stupid thing to regulate. The government doesn't need to Nanny adults!

Yeah, I know, but that 0.1% will typically rape a portion of the 99.9%... hmm, if we could get them to keep it within themselves....

Yup, totally, and I actually agree with your point of view. Remember though, you're thinking about it as an intelligent rational person. Unfortunately there's a sector of society that is neither... and given that we have this pathetic view "everyone is equal", we thus make laws based on the lowest common denominator.

So no Rockstar Games Bully?! Not that it's that great a game... but to be honest I don't really turn my stomach playing a game where a kid assaults another kid by giving them swirlies, etc.

I think the limit is easily drawn from society itself through what it will pay for, if something disgusts you, you're not going to buy it. If there's no market to create something that disgusting then why bother creating it. It doesn't need a guiding hand to say what's appropriate or not.

Ooo... shall we start the "rational person" license. Then only people who live up to this governing standard are allowed access to such material. Oh no... creating more bureaucrats! Meh, guess I can still buy the banned shit off ebay if it's good enough to be worth buying. IE Manhunt!

    Why not?
Sounds better than the "Bridgecorp Monopoly" we currently teach kids.

A license to breed would be a good start.

Give Postal 2 a whirl if you like some good black humour. Not available in NZ AFAIK, but probably torrentable.
