Bought a bike off Trade Me and it's a lemon

I bought a bike off trade me its a 1997 yamaha xtz660 tenere. I rang the guy up befor bidding to make sure it was all good with no problems as its done 93,000k and was in the north island. Anyway he said no its sweet as so i got it for $2500 so i was happy as reg and wof and its realy tidy. Had to wait to weeks for it to get here and right from the day i picked it up i knew something wasnt right with it. First it would not idel back fireing exhaust was from a 1200 bandit it wasnt happy. Allso engine oil in the air box. so i drained oil as was over full made a new muffler for it and had carb jetted and cleaned. Got it back was now running better and would idel. But no power would not go faster than 120. Did comp test and only 85psi. Have striped it down and it now needs a new piston and a re bore. Im so pissed off as was realy looking forward to geting out and doing all the back roads.

Did the previous owner do a service on it within the past 5 years?

Word of advice re trade me or online auctions, steer well friggin clear of auction questions and replies from owner where there is "text speak",i.e if the owner can't read and write to me it means intelligence is missing, hence buyer beware.

Or if they can't spell stay away.

Yep, lots of Retards on reTardme

At that sort of price for something so old, I'd expect a bike with a well maintained engine in excellent condition.

Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Sorry but if you buy a bike with 93000 km on the clock you need to expect it's going to be a bit tired.

Did you consider the north islands higher lattitude

Swap the 120 speedo for a 160kph speedo

Did comp test and only 85psi. Have striped it down and it now needs a new piston and a re bore. Im so pissed off as was realy looking forward to geting out and doing all the back roads.
Wow with new psiton and rings, now your be able to go there and back again by a tenere rather than just there
Never a nice susprise to get something less than you expected.despite being pissed off your still happy about doing the bike up and getting things sorted.......a single with 93k on the clock I would expect too be a little worse for wear in the piston department and would have been a consideration in the purchase if it were me.......

buying online can be risky and if you can't get it cheaked out all you can do is hope for the best and plan for the worst

I brought a XT from a guy in Ashburton in Jan and road it 600+ks homethat day and had only seen a pic of the bike,I got it for $1500 but had already considerd what it cost me to get it up too stratch

My RF has twice as many kms as Drews. With the exception of 2nd gear it runs like clockwork too.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.
