AU cancelled his talk at the law school today due to a protest against it. some good quotes from the racist thug include 'I beleive it was only pakeha students, I dont think any maori kids were involved at all' and 'I thought racism was dead and buried'.
I actually think it is a reasonable question to ask.
We hear all his filibustering about what needs to be done, his rants about how it's all the white mans fault, his crying that someone protesting him but what has he done for NZ?
I put him him in the same group as Winston and the greens, good outside government, but should never be aloud to make the rules.
What perplexes me the most is the news medias obsession with Hone Harawira and his antics. Realistically, what percentage of the NZ community does he represent with his views? Even amongst the Maori community he would represent a minority group surely? Yet, every night, we have to sit through another "news" item about what hes been up too.
TVNZ and TV3 news are obsessed with the man.
This explains everything.
(sorry I don't know how to embed)
I was sent this recording of his speech.

The answer? Lazy reporting and easy pickings. Hone provides cheap sensationalist clips in soundbites.
My instinct is to blame the low standards of current journalism but actually that isn't fair. We have some very good journalists but you'll only find their deeper work in the occasional column or in their blogs.
Really we the public are to blame. Put a serious program on television...and we change channels. Print a thoughtful newspaper article...and its passed over for the sports news. I don't know how we change this but at present many people find life too complex and busy to pause and think.
i cant believe he's still around, evry1 hates him, he's blatantly racist, maoris hate him, he publicly breaks the law. How can anyone take him seriously.
