I've just chanced upon this ancient representation of the elusive sea chicken whilst trawling the depths of the internet archival systems. In classical times, the sea chicken had obtained almost iconic status in some cultures as a dietry staple for remote sea faring communities. It seems that the folklore and traditions of many varied and far-flung cultures make similar references to the sea chicken through both song and art, but this image below is an extremely well preserved, though subtle, representation of the prestige with which the sea chicken is held amongst this one particular community. It was found as part of a larger wall painting in ancient Carthage, in the southern Mediterranean, dating back to pre-Roman times. This portion of the painting was recently removed from the wall (to enable more thorough analysis) and is currently held in the National Museum in Cairo.
Editors note: Though rarely seen in the wild over the last decade, the sea chicken has continued to remain a creature which sybolises strength, freedom and nobility to many people groups globally. It is also a fine table bird.
