    Red face Bike starts intermittently

    I ride a 1990 kawasaki zzr250.

Over the last few days I have been having trouble starting it, it either:
    - starts straight away,
    - makes a couple of click sounds and then if I keep the starter button sometimes turns over
    - makes a buzzing/clicking sound in the junction box (does not turn over)
    - does nothing at all (like the key is turned off)

my guess is there is a loose connection in the junction box.
Battery is fine, all lights work and when it turns over it runs fine.

One more thing, junction box appears riveted shut, can i get into it to fix the problem or does it need replacing?
    Junction box # 26021-1070

    Thanks

Sounds like a starter motor issue ... rather than solinoid issue. An Auto sparky would be able to pinpoint the problem ...

My project bike was doing exactly that except it would not wind over at full speed. New brushes fixed it. Check Trade Me to see if they are easily obtainable.

Is it possible to load test a bike battery?

Just in case its doing everything to hide a dud cell as they do.

maybe fuel pump? plus neutral cut ot switch

had a zxr 400 h and the regulator / rectifier wires 3 from the alternator melted there are three thin yellow wires from the alternator that get really hot and melt the connections sometimes the regulator stuffs thats the aluminium thing with cooling heat sink fins on it under seat $500 for a replacement the clicking could be a dry fuel pump struggling to fill ? air leak or obstruction in the fuel line from tank or needs some choke and wide throttle to prime up? and consider you might have two issues the completely dead situation the neutral cut out on the clutch lever or kick stand, or kill switch switch these can be bypassed to check if your handy with side cutters and connector blocks. suggest a visit to a honest mech

Beg borrow or steal a booster pack or jump leads.
Connect black from alternative power source to a frame earthing point, and red to red connector on your starter motor.
If she she spins straight up, then the motor's fine, look at your battery first.
If you're still stuck, go to a mech. The clicking is your starter relay.
