Saturday 14th
This was my first round of the series on the Doohan Racing NSR250. The guys are really doing an awesome thing supplying me a bike to race, that will be prepped and ready to go each round. Gareth had finished getting the bike looking great and ready to go at the last minute which was cool. Unfortunately Gareth wasn’t able to make it to the track due to work which was pretty disappointing. But Patrick was set to come and did a great job sorting the bike out for me.
The weather wasn’t looking very good on the way over early Saturday morning but I was ready to race no matter what. F3 was the last class out so we were hoping that the track had some dry lines because it wasn’t wet enough to go out on wets, so slicks it was. We had found the new rear sets so had decided to swap them which became harder than intended but we got there even if I slightly late to the dumby grid for qualify. This was my first outing on the bike now and it hadn’t been warmed up properly and the tyre warmers hadn’t been on the slicks because it was another last minute swap, so I wasn’t very confident on the wet track without many dry spots. I was expecting to have come last in qualify which I was okay with. I would just have to really start pushing in my races. But surprisingly I hadn’t and had got 20th or 24. Stoked!
Race 1 was interesting. I had a relatively good start for a first timer on the 2 stroke pushing hard into turn one. I was much more confident with hot tyres feeling well stuck to the track. I was sticking with a few bike but started losing ground as the race went on. The bike wasn’t feeling to good and would bog up far too early in the power. I kept on going, just being a little more cautious of what was going on. I finished in 18th overall and 12 for F3.
Patrick worked on the bike so Race 2 the bike was running awesome. I had a much better start and it was making its way down the straights heaps better, running right through the power but still didn’t have quite long enough legs and was running out of go before the end of the straights. I fought with a couple of bigger bikes like a KTM 690 which I managed to get my way past and just held him off down the straights long enough to pull away through the turns. I finished 9th in F3 and 14th overall and knocked off 5 seconds from race one.
Race three was much the same with a relatively good start. I fought with a 650 pro twin and a 125 GP for most of the race. I was holding them both off in the last few laps until I missed a gear change into turn 1, letting them both past. I found my gearing and pushed to catch up but was under a second to slow and finished 8th in f3 and 14th again in the race.
I had an awesome round on the Doohan Racing NSR and the guys did an awesome job looking after me and the bike. Thanks Heaps Guys, Can’t wait for round 2!
