Trademe for Gubbermint,"they would fit right in"

After seeing comments on Trademe listings, where members are telling other members that trade me does'nt allow viewing of items for sale....I contacted Trade me asking why, this is their response

    (Thanks for contacting us.

As we don't allow contact details to be posted on the site, you won't be able to arrange viewing for items without breaching our terms and conditions. The only exception to this is on listings for motor vehicles, real estate and some pets where contact details can be included by the seller during the listing process.

Contact details placed in the text of a listing can be viewed by anyone. This means you may be at risk of being contacted by a non-genuine trader or scammer.

Listings that include contact details are often completed outside the usual auction process. The main issue with selling outside of Trade Me is that there is no record of the sale. You cannot leave feedback, and it's very difficult to assist you in the event that a dispute arises.(Meaning we dont get our commission)

We suggest that the seller takes advantage of the multiple photos option, to upload as many pictures of the item as possible. We also suggest that interested buyers use the Question and Answer feature to ask the seller any questions they may have regarding the condition of the item. By the way, you're welcome to include the URL of a website that sets out more information on any item you've listed, as long as it's not offering items for sale, or providing contact details.(we dont make money out of one photo)

In addition to this you could use a service such as SafeTrader to complete the sale. SafeTrader is an escrow service, owned and operated by Trade Me. SafeTrader will hold all money involved safely in a Trust account, until the transaction is completed and both parties are happy. The SafeTrader service also allows for an inspection period - so if the goods are not as described or are damaged, the buyer will have the option of rejecting them. You can register for SafeTrader here: www.safetrader.co.nz (meaning this way we make alot of money from your money for doing nothing)

    Thanks for your understanding.)

You left out the part where they don't want you selling the goods in multiple places at once... If you sell through them, you sell through them only...

Well, that's what they tried to tell me anyway.

So what you are saying is you want to use all the advantages of their website without it costing any money.
    How unreasonable of them.

No...Im saying that anyone should be able to view any auction/listing before bidding, without the seller feeling they are breaking the policies of Trademe

    Not quite.

When I tried selling one bike through them, and also KB (not linked, just said, reserve the right to withdraw, as advertised elsewhere), I received a snotty email...

Thing is, all trademe has going for them is the monopoly, and they want to keep it that way. Their rates are not competitive with the smaller ones, but not enough people list on those yet. Now if somebody made a metasearch that included TM's and all the other's listings, it'd be halfway to breaking the monopoly.

Also, what is the deal with shipping fees, on TM is it shipping and handling like ebay, or just the postage cost? I just paid 7 bucks to parcel post a cd which seems a little excessive.

I got one of those too last year.....my reply to them was that not everybody has a Computer or is a member of TM.........

I don't mind paying success fee's if I sell something through TM

They already get a listing fee on bike's,Car's,properties etc, then they want success fee's,does it really cost any more to sell any of them with 10 photo's than it does to sell a lollipop with the same number of photo's

But the "real issue" is the number of people that miss out on sale's because they believe viewing is against TM policies..........

They are just set by the seller, some members will make more profit just from shipping cost than they do the actual item....

Last week I sent 40kg of bike parts from wanga's to dunna's it was going to cost $170 But I managered to get it reduced to $60 by going commerical rates.....

another way to save cost on shipping is send your own postal/courier bag/stamp's to the seller

I was under the impression that the listing fee was for fixed price items and the success fee was for auctions.

TradeMe also has long list of "restricted and prohibited" items

I've got an old paraglider I'm not using. Tried to hock it off through TM, but turns out it's a restricted item. One of the local PG safety nazi's complained and TM pulled my ad - and the bastards would not give a refund....

I've been shagged around by lack of viewing before.
"Oh that's not what I expected..."
"Why the fuck didn't you view it before you brought it you dumb twat?"

I don't bother with TardMe much now.

Trade Me has always been a rip off,but they can charge whatever they want, because they are the biggest by a long way,so we need to start using the smaller sites like sella!!
