    Canada tests 'noise radar'

A device that captures a decibel level, audio recording and video image is being tested in the Canadian city of Calgary. The device is being tested as part of a scheme to implement the city’s new noise level regulations.

The ‘Noise Snare’ is the invention of Mark Nesdoly, who created it after his infant daughter was awakened by the noise from a passing vehicle featuring an aftermarket exhaust.

Some information on how the Noise Snare works

When the ‘Noise Snare’ - which is vehicle mounted and fully automatic - detects a vehicle exceeding the preset noise limit, it records a short video of the offender with stereo sound.

The sound the offending vehicle makes as it passes by permits it to be singled out even in heavy traffic or on multi-lane roads. Key information such as the time, date, location and sound pressure level (noise level) in dB, is superimposed on the video image, allowing law enforcement to prosecute the offender.

Maybe it just has an image filter which searches for neon lights or Harley Davidson badges.
