    Child beauty pageants

I will probably get slammed for bringing this topic here, but did anyone else read the article on stuff this morning about child beauty pageants? The gist is that the Australian and NZ psychiatric boards want them banned here (there is one supposed to be held in Aussie in a couple of months, based on the American model of how these things run).
When I saw the photo of America's "top child pageant" girl I honestly thought I was looking at a Barbie. She could not have been more than 9 at the most and looked like she belonged in a Las Vegas casino!

Interestingly I saw also that the "botox mum" is now claiming is was all a hoax. Tui anyone?

Does anyone know if there has been any long-term studies done of children who get dragged around the beauty pageant circuit and what effects this may have had on them growing up? Apparently these competitions have classes for a young as 0 years (i.e. babies)!

I'm not saying that as a "one - off" that these things are evil or corrupting or whatever; lots of little girls would probably love to dress up and participate in something like this at some stage in their young lives. But to make a "career" out of it like obviously many parents do to their kids is just ........... I'm actually lost for words!

If you're saying you're against them I agree. Everyone loves a cute baby photo but of course the babies haven't got a clue they're being photograped and shown off, so no harm done. Except maybe a wee bit of embarrassment at their wedding...

These poor children are being exploited for their looks by self-interested parents who either don't care about the effects on their kids or are thick as two short planks and have no idea what they are doing.

When I was born the Doc told my Mum I was too beautiful to be a boy... Something changed a lot as I grew up...

You hope. Plumbing will do that to ya
Edbear all dressed up for the beauty pageant. Why the F am I laughing the doc told my mum I needed ballet for flat feet ... thankfully we was too poor so no ballet.

Agreed these thing might be ok as an entertainment at an A&P show once a year but not as seriously as some of these USA parents take it.

PrincesBandit I agree with you on that Botox mum

I dont like them at all..... Some things are just plain weird. Ironic that we cant smack our kids but we can force them to dress up in sexually provocative costumes and sell themselves on stage....

While I agree they are a strange thing and a waste of time, since we don't run them here, I wonder if we need to add them to the ever-growing list of things to ban.

If the would utilize the opportunity child beauty pageants bring, it could be a good thing. I mean every pedophile in the same room at once, how much easier could catching them be???

Most kids don't need to be forced to chase a rugby ball round like a pack of bumble bees mate. They love it. I certainly did as a kid.

That doesn't change the fact that it's only most kids, and some are certainly forced to play by parents reliving their youth or whatever, and as such it's really no different. You could just as easily argue that most young girls like to dress up and have people make a fuss over them.

You can argue any subject on earth. I just don't think the rugby/beauty pagent thing is a good comparison.

The ugly side of parents living their lives vicariously through their children exists in almost all activities.

Just go along to a few junior motocross meetings.
