Almost all race meetings in NZ now require that every bike has a transponder fitted. This is what riders wanted and asked for.
Whether you buy your own or rent at each meeting is up to you, but in the next year or two, certainly at national level, every rider will be required to own their own transponder.
I recommend the direct power ones. Much better and no worries about charging or batteries failing.

l did buy one told it would me fine but turns out its only any good for a 150 street stock! piss me off ! so theres all my money gone on some crap! why dont they make them all the same!
There used to be two types, one for Road race and one for MX. Suprises me that it wouldn't play to be honest, I know of at least one person who used the MX transponder on his Motard with no issues.
there are more than 2 types, the mx, kart, road race etc are different, check the store on www.mylaps.com to see the differences, you should not mix the diffence one as they record at different speeds, we had a guy bring a speedway one to mx and he was picked up metres ahead of the normal mx ones,
on some motard tracks you can use the motocross one, as long as the finish line is not on a part of the track that you are doing over 120km/h
transonders hold their value well, it is something that you will need to have someday, the kart guys have to own theirs,
also if you have battery issues with the chargeable ones, do not use mylaps, transonder serives in aussie are very good to deal with and much cheaper
