For clarification, a 'ballad' is a song that tells a story. It will have a begining, a middle and an end. 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' mentioned earlier is a good example.
A ballad doesn't necessarily have to be in that slow almost narrative style either although that is the most common. A lot of Jim Steinman's songs could be classed as ballads although he probably wouldn't thank you for that description. 'Bat out of Hell, Paradise by the Dashboard Light' etc.
