    Nipples

    Hi

I've got an oldish BMW F650GS with rusty front spoke nipples. I'd like to replace them, so just wondering who in Auck would sell em. I don't want genuine gold plated BMW ones, just regular old stainless nips. Does anyone know about how much they would be?

Also, with mountain bike wheels where the rims and spokes are much lighter, it's critical the spoke tension is perfect to ensure the wheel stays true after a pounding. It's normally recommended that a trained wheel builder sets them up.

My F650's rims are massive though, so I was wondering if I could just get away with doing it myself, so each spoke as about the same tension and the rim remains circular (not eliptical, when spun)? Has anyone built up a wheel themselves before? Any tips or recommendations?

    Thanks heaps guys!

I googled it a while back and got a really good run-thru on how to do it and it sounded pretty straight forward for someone with good mech skill experience.

Yes you can do it yourself BUT replace one at a time and you will need a jig to check the wheel for true afterwards.

Remember that by adjusting the tension you affect no only the elipitical but the off set as well. MEASURE that before you start!

Thanks Kickaha, I contacted Tom at Wheelandspoke, but he gave me the bad news that BMW use a non std thread on their spokes (of course) and he doesn't stock them.

The other option would be to get the old nipples re-plated.

Cost you a fortune and you will need to remove ALL of them making it a full relace and much more complicated. Options include

Ask Tom for a price to replace spokes and nipples

Treat rust with rust kill and paint em 1 at a time with a wee brush. (take less time than relacing)

Just rang Progressive Platers and only $40. I'd have to totally rebuild wheel anyway if I wanted to replace nipples. Not such a big drama... in front of telly with fire going. Tom quoted $185 for new spokes and nips, supply only.
