yeah they were, but alas the Poms were great inventers, just they couldnt improve anything as they seem to get stuck in old fassion methods, took the yanks or more so Japs to improve and take forward... however those with soft spots for BMC etc dont cear, Brit shit is cool.

Bought it like that! Not much room, but radiator removed and another fitted up front. From memory, there was less than an inch to spare behind the fan pulley.

First car and all that and it was really shiny

Yes it was,I found they were to softly sprung in the front and tended to understeer badly when pushing hard, but the motor was great

We also had the 3.0L engine in a MK2 Cortina, which handled and stopped way worse than the Capri but in some ways was a lot of fun right up to point when it ended up on its roof

I think he meant the metric tonne so 100km/h. My mate's Uncle's 850 would do 70mph, so 115km/h, and we had a ball in it!

Of course at the time I'd just updated my 1950 Bradford to the mighty '59 CA Bedford which would only do 65mph flat out...

A very old friend of the family had a mint 1300 Auto and I got to drive him around in it and I loved it! It would do over 70mph, too. Mum got a Mk1 1800 and it was beaut to drive on long trip, very comfy! Only issue was water getting into the distributor as the Mk1's didn't have the later model's shield so I just stuck a piece of hardboard down in front of it.

Was dissapointed one day to have wound it up to 98mph on the clock coming into Warkworth only to be passed by an 1850 Galant, (early '70's)!

I learnt to drive in a Morris/Austin 1300 and drove my Dads Austin A60 and numerous other English shitters in the Post Office.... Morris Marinas, Chevettes, Minis, bedfords..... Post Office cars and vans could really rev out in each gear....

Minis were great in the gravel...... I liked them more than the heavy Falcons and Holdens.
Then Jap cars arrived....they had radios to block out the noise....could rev them even more!!!!!!

Aussie assembled, Austin Mini. Worked 1275 motor. Weber carbie. That thing could do the Tonne alright. Me and some mates surprised a few V8 drivers off the lights.

Cor! Yep, no argument the current ones are abso-loot-ly stunning.

The pommy car industry mightn't be the power house it once was but the niche car makers over there still turn out some stunning stuff.

Can be a bit thirsty at times though. Was talking to an old freind, haven't seen him in years. He's been a bit more (a LOT more) sucessful than me. We were discussing cars and he mentioned that, at one stage the computer in his car noted he was using one litre per kilometer. Turns out he has a Bentley turbo. Must have been a fun ride, but.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

A mate had the ex PDL 1293 Cooper S as a road car.....family money....
Fun to sit at the lights waiting for them to change while the smoke from the tyres engulfed waiting pedestrians -again, family money. Couldn't do that now but.

thank christ the poms never mastered rust proofing or we'd still be driving the shitters...and I speak as a former Jag owner....

Make that Kiwi's as we assembled most of them here...even Jags at one stage. Believe it or not the BMC's were dipped in a phosphor tank up to the lower window line - but it was a different type of phosphor compound than used today and obviously didn't work...but the intention was there.
