Hmmm, try a Zephyr cylinder head frost plug on a Mk2

It's at the rear of the head.

    About 4" from the firewall

We used to cut a hole in the firewall for those. Or,if the customer preferred we could remove the head or engine for those with a front plug in the rear of the block. Frost plugs, another skill lost to the young mechanic.

The first car I owned was a ex MOT MK2 Zephyr which had that exact "modification"

Modern engines don't have them? Don't need them? Or just don't get used long enough to need them replaced?

Attached are pics of my first "car" the 1950 Bradford and our old 1952 Wolseley 6/80Loved both!
My dad had a 6/80, (or sick 80). I rolled it while joyriding. I wasn't popular with the olds...can't imagine why. Was 16 at the time.

Loved that car. He replaced it with one of the first A40 Farinas in the country. After he had it a few years we whipped the motor out and shipped it to Aucks where My big bro raised the compressin, shave 4lbs (I think) off the flywheel. Went like a wee rocket but was a bitch for stalling!

All of the above - but the most important thing is the improvement of cooling systems (the elimination of air (oxygen) and the use of inhibitor to stop corrosion.

Decidedly unpopular! But eventually they forgave me. The motor work was done with Dad's blessing-request. When he died I bought the A40 from my mother, who never drove, for my wife.

Before to days of our high tek casting methods the cores which were made of baked sand had to be had to be supported. The frost plugs were the plugs that supported the core in the sand mould.
