So now there has been a big one in the Kermadec Islands.
Are we (earth) getting more of these or are they just being 'reported' more?
Sizable ones always get reported...if its news making (damage and/or tsunami etc)
Rotorua have 100+ annually but they are very minor and you hardly feel them.
I remember around 1979 there we counted 12 in a single day while living there.
Some better reporting, yes, but records do show that over the last century or so, they have been getting more frequent and bigger. The Earth is going through a phase at the moment of plate shifting so expect more, possibly more frequent, larger earthquakes.
You don't get to be an old dog without learning a few tricks.
Shorai Powersports batteries are very trick!
I think the equipment is just more senstive now than it was 30 years ago, so are being reported more, growing up south of Rotorua they were an everyday occuance you just lived with earth-quakes........
I'm going down into a buring ring of fire.....

REM song released nov 1987
That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and
snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world
serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed
it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, the Ladder
start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire
in a fire, representing seven games, and a government
for hire at a combat site. Left of west and coming in
a hurry with the furys breathing down your neck. Team
by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing. Fine, then. Uh oh,
overflow, population, common food, but it'll do to Save
yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs,
listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and
the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic,
patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty
psyched.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign
towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself
churn. Lock it in, uniforming, book burning, blood
letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a motive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no
fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament,
tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions,
offer me alternatives and I decline.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
The other night I dreamt of knives, continental
drift divide. Mountains sit in a line, Leonard
Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester
Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You
symbiotic, patriotic, slam bug net, right? Right.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel
fine...fine...
Churches are monuments to self importance
I would go with being reported more. And also earthquakes would have more news resonance in NZ just now.
We now have better detection equipment and communications and have more detectors in place to detect with more being placed around the planet. I read somewhere, that we have around 15000 seismographs stations things scattered and in the next few years 1500 more will be in place...
So basically it means we are now detecting every single earthquake and now relising how many there actually are that we never knew about.
The other thing to think on, years a go you wouldn't hear about the earthquake till the next night (unless you were there) on the news (sometimes 2 days) now we hear about it with 1/2 Hr it will be on the net.
With the ChCH quake we here in NZ are now on edge about every report on an Earthquake... I was getting sick of reading about every aftershock on YahooNews... after a big quake there are after shocks one thing we know that happens... no need to report all of them. Napier had something like 8500 after shocks... ChCh is up around that number as well...
NZ has thousands of Earthquakes every year... many are to small to be detected. you can see the pattern along the main fault... But shake something hard enough it will cause and make another faultline...
