Rugby World Cup fleecing in Auckland

I have the misfortune to be taking my daughter to Auckland in September for a couple of days, for specialist medical assessment. We have family and friends we could stay with, but prefer to be independent - my daughter's extreme food allergies can be an awkward issue in other people's homes. So we decided to look at motels.

Bloody hell. With the RWC circus in town, all accommodation providers are gleefully scalping any visitor to their "fair" city, charging up to three times normal tariff.

Supply and demand be fucked - I'll sleep in the sodding rental car before I pay $400 a night for a basic studio unit in a motel.

    Welcome to Auckland? Yeah, right...

At least Air New Zealand and Budget Rental Cars are not abusing the situation by fleecing their customers - good on them.

I've just had a heated email exchange with one motelier, his response was - sorry, that's the market rates - but he would pray for my daughter.

Ah religion, prayers are free eh?

I don't think it's an Auckland thing; if the RWC was being held in Wellington the price gouging would probably be happening there too.

Sounds like you're in the unfortunate situation of being caught in the crossfire, no chance of having the treatment moved forward or back a month?

It'll be interesting to see what Auckland taxi rates etc will go up to during the tournament and interesting to see how the rest of the North Island's accomodation prices change too - I travel a lot these days.

BTW, sleeping in a rental car might make you feel better but please don't make your daughter do it too

..thats a sad state of affairs...symptomatic of the social fuck that pervades our outwardly 'clean, green, caring society' that we portray to be...more like desperate money grabbing fucks in a backwater, deluding themselves, really...

Lol. As I said, we've got other options, it looks like we'll pursue those.

I suspect that this gouging frenzy will diminish closer to the RWC, when the beds don't fill.

In the meantime, they can take a flying fuck at themselves.

Stay in hamilton - apart from the game days theres plenty of cheap accommodation available and with all the motorway upgrades its only an hour and a bit to get to Auckland!!

Lol - late reply just in:

...1 bedroom apartment with 1 queen bed normally $300.00 special rate $388.00 per night.

    Or

2 bedroom apartment with 1 king and 1 queen bed normally $400.00 special rate $450.00 per night.

As you can see this is a discounted rate and based on currently availability...
Wow - good discounts there, eh...?

I think you'll find that if they do raise the prices there will be a large increase in the number of runners and fights.

It's hard enough not to abuse the dickhead (majority) taxi drivers here when your pissed at the best of times.

The whole thing is a big girly blouse crapin joke...
Complaints about sitting in the weather at Eden Park?...

87'..a few of us got tickets to the Final the week before...
Thanks to some crying Aussies that sold thier tickets when the France beat them.
It fucking rained the whole day until about 15 mins to kickoff then the sun came out..
Did we complain?..hell no we were at the first ever Rugby World Cup Final.

Moral of the story...if you want to be at the final, wait till after the semi's, there could be a few cheap tickets and you feel fleeced.

The greed knows no bounds - those who booked accommodation before the gouging started are not safe.

Interesting to see on TV One News tonight that motels are now cancelling some early bookings, blaming "double-booking". They give full refunds - and can then resell the rooms at three times the original booked price.
