CBX CDi fault? Easy to diagnose?

Bikes been running well in the time Ive had it. Today on way to work it back fired then would not rev over 2500 rpm. I pulled up around the corner to a stop then it died. Would not restart. I walked it home. Went back to bike at lunch time convinced it was ignition. Lead pulled of easy from plug. Put an old plug on the lead and no spark. No power at coil that I could get reading on as its hidden under the tank. Unplug CDI to see if dirty connection. No so replugged it back in. Recheck spark and its sparking. Refit lead and bike runs.

So I figured dirty connection at cdi or lose plug lead. Take it for ride tonight and runs fine for 5 mins then same problem but this time I dont stop and it stays at 2000/2500 rpm. Then 400 mtrs it clears and runs fine. Rode for another 10 mins with no problem. Could this be a faulting CDi or bad connections?

Previous owner had this to say in old for sale ad "The carb issue stems partially, I believe, form rubber tipped needles and float valves. teh idle mixture is impossible to get even close to correct so sometimes it idles and others....
Also now and then when you get onto the second carb it loses all power. I
believe it's something to do with the float valve again. It started doing this in wellington and i pulled the carbs to bits to check for dirt etc. Everything was fine until the ride yesterday.... weird." Im sure its the same issue as bike has only travelled 200ks since he sold it. But as I messed with ignition and got it running makes me believe its that. Also have a reciept from lady I bought it off for ignition wiring repairs from October 2010.

    Ideas?

How sealed is the CDI? If you can get inside for a look it sounds like a faulty connection or dry solder joint, which you probably fixed for a while by flexing the connector and/or circuit board when you unplugged/replugged the connector.

Had the same thing with the temp gauge on my ducati, and on my stereo amp, worked when they felt like it. Resoldered the connections, all sorted.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

Looked to be one of those fill of resin jobbies. May just find out how much a new one is if they still do them.

Have you cleaned out your fuel tap? Or checked it for a vacuum/fuel leak, could be leaking fuel past the diaphragm.
    Start very simple
Does the plug lead have a cap on the coil end that screws on to the coil? If so, check for cracks.
Are all the earths clean and with good connection?

Going to check most of that tonight. Im suspect of it being ignition as no spark when I tested it yesterday. So I think I will remove the tank and have a good look at the coil and wiring and earths. Not been able to find a frame earth yet. Also going to check the plug to see if its fouling.

Carbs will be getting a rebuild once I can find kits.

Just spoke to George. Amazing memory that guy. He remembered my bike and that the owner at the time wanted him to do budget repair. Turns out the float valve in the secondry carb was stuffed. He just cleaned it up and refitted it. Told the customer it would not last. Very helpfull guy and will use him in future.

Econohonda have the valves in stock.

Hopefully it's just the float valve then
