    Seems odd.

As I've really ony ever been playing with quite crude setups I've found it perfectly fine to tune by trial and error, slowly adding advance until knock then backing it off 'til power drops off then going back between the two.

On my mates old rally car when the advance mechanism broke we were cranking it forward and backwards depending on the nature of the Special Stage.

Just look at the timing on my ignitech now.

    10deg base advance
    then ramps up from 10deg @ 1500 rpm - 35deg @ 3500 RPM and then stays at 35deg.

Anyone know if this is close to standard?

It would seem that is what i will be doning... trial and error but it would be nice to work out whats a good starting point.. etc

With an FXR on a Kart track? Shit, I'd spend a lot of time and effort on other parts of the bike (and rider, i.e. experience) before I even touched the engine!

Do you still have that standard gear?
I doubt very much that the curve will change with load so maybe just put the standard kit back on it (or borrow a std bike) and map it out with a timing light if no one has the info readily available.

The top graph. You want all your advance in before peak torque. 8000 on an FXR so they say. So maybe 28 @ 7500. But like other people have said. Really needs to be done on a Dyno listening for knock under load.

You should be forced to ride it standard, lights and all, until you win your first race and dont try and give me that "but Ive done my time" crap either.

No need to force it: If one wants to get good its a good way to go.

It certainly looks like the dyno is the way... trial and error.

Like most i am unsure what gains there are but hay... if it gives a little then I am all for it.

True that. And if you get a little, then that is more and more is always good.

    I agree with Kel
But Arron's only come 2nd a few times so he needs to try a little harder to win!

Maybe more gains in getting a good start than overall HP

Only in when racing equal or slower racers over a short race.
