Seems odd.
As I've really ony ever been playing with quite crude setups I've found it perfectly fine to tune by trial and error, slowly adding advance until knock then backing it off 'til power drops off then going back between the two.
On my mates old rally car when the advance mechanism broke we were cranking it forward and backwards depending on the nature of the Special Stage.

Just look at the timing on my ignitech now.
10deg base advance
then ramps up from 10deg @ 1500 rpm - 35deg @ 3500 RPM and then stays at 35deg.
Anyone know if this is close to standard?

It certainly looks like the dyno is the way... trial and error.
Like most i am unsure what gains there are but hay... if it gives a little then I am all for it.
