    My bike don't go

    Hey, my bike is in a no go state at the moment and I think the CDI's gone, no spark from either coil so that makes me guess CDI.

    Does any one around manawatu have a GSX of some description they wouldn't mind loaning me a CDI 4 a few minutes to confirm this? Please?

    Or if anyone else has any other bright ideas fire away.

    If your bike has the same ignition system as the earlier GSXs it may have an ignitor pack situated under the side cover , disconnect the two wire plug from the pulse coils then using an analog multimeter on K1 ohms check ,plug it into the two wires on the ignitor pack as you connect, the 1and 4 plug will fire on disconnect 2and 3 will fire this eliminates the pulse coils if you have no spark then ignitor probably U/s .Same for CDI black box , Hope this helps and does not confuse the issue. I have been away from full time repairs for a few years .

    Could also be a fault with the kick stand cut-out, ignition, kill switch...

    Have you checked the fuses?... (dont mean to underrate your skill)

    Hope theres somit there that you havent thought of yet

    I have a spare CDI box for my bike. Check your #'s. Mine is BB1220.
    The CDI boxes, and coils on older GSX and GSXR's are known to be fairly weak. Try another pair of coils (of which I also have if you need to borrow) to confirm. Then move onto CDI. Just double check all wiring and plugs too.

    I also know a guy selling a wrecked 89 GSX600F. Has performed a nice cartwheel, but engine, coils, cdi, brakes etc all seem to be fine. If you or anyone else is interested?

    Get your coils tested at an auto electrician's. Does not cost much for them to check them for you. If you find they need replacing, think about putting Honda or Kawa coils in instead as they are more reliable. I had "fun" with Gixxer coils on my 1991 GXSR250. It was cheaper and more reliable to put second hand CBR250RR coils ($80 for two) in than getting new Gixxer coils (@ $160 each new on slow boat from Japan).

    I usualy go to the CDI connector and check in puts and out puts - you should have a 12v supply voltage,then some big scary voltage (say,at least 250v)from the charge coil,a smaller trigger voltage and then another big voltage going out to the ign coil,check colour codes to see what goes where.The one missing is where the problem lies.

    I might be interested in some parts once I confirm what the problem is with my bike.

    Well I'm 99.9% sure it's the CDI, coils have ~3.2 ohms each at the primaries which sounds about and there is power getting to the CDI. And the multimeter hooked up to the signal generator input doesn't generate any spark.

    So for the final test does any one have a similar CDI I can borrow to try. The model is 19C00 I think. Has to plugs on it, a large plug with 4 leads but only three are used (signal generator 2x + tacho) on my bike, and a small plug with 4 leads (coils, etc) and all are used.

    hmmm

    Replaced CDI, replaced coils but still no spark. Signal generator is producing an output of about +- 2V at regular intervals, approximately 35ms between two positive pulses but I'm not sure what I should expect from here. This seems to slow to me but I'm not sure. Anyone no what I should expect to see? See the attached pic for what I see while the motor is been cranked over.

    What voltage levels show I expect on the primary side of the coils?

    Or if any one has any other ideas?

    Thanks to GROOMERS mate I now have another bike to take parts off to try but I'm at a loss to what to try next.

    Try the scope on AC or AC/DC coupled - a 2v signal is ok for the trigger,that's all it needs.Being a 4 cyl with twin coils it should pulse once per revolution,that's pretty slow at cranking - but those pulses look pretty uneven,different magnetudes and spaces between.Can you find the exciter coil input? This should show a figure of up to 500v AC,at least 250v to work.If you have no exciter input it won't go.

    Yeah I wasn't very happy with the iregulatiy of the pulses either. Cranking rpm should be > 200 rpm aye. Giving 1 positive pulse per rev? = 200Hz correct.

    What's the exciter coil? Is that part of the signal generator?

    Trouble with CDI is there are just too many names applied to each seperate part - so like I said in my first post,just look at voltages and their time signals.You want one big fella coming out of the alt area giving big AC voltages,this charges the capacitor of the CDI,next is a small irregular voltage coming out of the alt area,or the other side of the motor - it doesn't matter,but this triggers the release of the capacitor (capacitor discharge,get it?) and sends that voltage to the coil,or coils.It can get complicated,like my XLV750 that had twin,twin output CDIs feeding 4 seperate coils for a twin cyl.Just find the voltages,the one that's missing is the one that's missing.

    Well after going down the electrics path last week everything looked as it should I gave up and took it into the bike shop. After fiddling with it for 2 hrs they gave it back in much better condition by changing the plugs which they had said were fouled (possibly from my testing) and playing with the carbs and resyncing them which they said were way out of sync. Now the bike goes much better

    Another question I have is I'm trying to change my bike sprockets and chain off my parts bike and put it on my bike but I can't undo the nut holding the front sprocket on. My method is appliy back brake and try and loosen the nut counter-clockwise (normal direction). I can't see enough thread to confirm this is the correct direction but I assume it still is. Does anyone else have any tips to getting it off?
