We had a hit-and-run on one of our cars outside our house earlier this year - around $1,500 of damage.
The side-on damage suggested that it had been reversed into, and likely from someone backing out from the house opposite. The old guy who lived there had regular visits from family, caregivers, and medical personnel, so I went to talk to him. He confirmed that he'd had a visit from a Medical Laboratory lady - he gave me her name.
I tracked her down at her workplace, and checked her company car - sure enough, damage on the right rear corner which matched the damage to ours, although it had obviously just been cleaned. I went inside and confronted her - she denied it, claiming that the damage on her car was already there. She also said that she hadn't parked in the driveway, which was later confirmed as an outright lie - she had been seen there by other neighbours.
I took photos of both cars, and presented them to her manager the next day, along with paint samples. The evidence was pretty clear - the unique shape of the Honda Jazz bumper was boldly stamped into the side of our car, along with a fair amount of paint. The boss lady immediately accepted liability for the damage caused by her employee.
The thing is, this was a respectable middle-aged woman - who not only did a runner, but told several lies in an attempt to avoid responsibility. It was a real eye-opener.
