Its something we will see more of I reckon as times get tougher & councils bequeath ever more rate rises. Our land value has increased by 35000 since it was last valued & we have done nothing to it
Always thought that a rates revolt would certainly stir things up...it'd only take a few hundred rate payers to refuse the rises & take it as far as the courts to really get the courts & the authorities worried.

Aye. Saw an idiot on telly the other night saying that the $8 mill overspend on the stadium was tiny in comparison to the final cost. He then had the balls to say that the money would have to be recouped from the rate payers... and that's just 1 project. That $8 mil is now lining someone else pocket... what's the bets it's the guy who quoted for the job? I always thought/expected, obviously naively, that when someone quoted you for a job that any overspend was their look out. It would seem that that isn't the case where councils are involved. Brushing off $8 million, as that guy did, is fuckin pathetic (that's 16 pretty decent sized houses). Damn right we'll see more of it, especially when we start getting more ppp projects. It'll be interesting to see what happens up norf and I do hope they don't fall for the "oh well it was supposed to cost you 31% and you're only being hit with 20%, you should count yourself lucky" shit that they constantly pull.
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

Something like that yes... up til 3 years ago pretty much a given. Why would I have wanted to hold my council to task over what they see as needed spending. And if you know/knew so much and fought the good fight back in the day, then you're not exactly ignorant to the "problem" and as such have a social responsibility to alert wankers like me to these practices. Who knows, one of us might achually do something about it... got any fight left in ya old man?

Maybe with hindsight you my take your head out of your arse to realise the idiot to which you refer was not the mayor and being a council member voted against it.

And what he is saying is that yes there is a big bill but crying about it and finger pointing is not going to make it go away so there will be changes to the way it is run.

Did I say it was the mayor? or even a member of the council?

... NOW I definately see who has their head up their arse. Such unquestionable belief despite the repeated evidence. Bitter and Toscar, the brains trust of NZ... NOW I understand why nothing is done ... t'ain't I with head up bum lad. Go back to selling stuff that people are going to buy and believing that it's all your own hard work

So what have you done about it, apart from airing your crackpot theories on the web?
    Did you even vote?

I've taken a small step. In time I hope to take another. You obviously have more information on all of these topics than I do. You obviously have more mental faculty than I do. You're obviously the better person for the "job". What have you done about it?
No. I won't vote for something I don't believe in without a bloody good reason. I see, and have never seen, any good reason to place my vote.

So you don't take the simplest part in the democratic process, but you do complain about the result?
In short, if you don't vote, don't whine.

An old old weak and deeply flawed argument. You need to have a democracy first, like I said, flawed. So with all of your superness, that's the best you have? I live my life in the same way as everyone else. I pay all of my taxes etc... for services and I'm not allowed to "whine" about how the govt spend it? Surely you, of all people, are not using propagandist sounds bites?

Thousands march against economic gloom in Spain

""The situation is getting worse but the root of the problem remains the same; this is a moment of crisis for capitalism," Jesus Gonzalez, 38, an airline employee said as he made for the Puerta del Sol."

liars and thieves "prosper" and the law abiding ordinary joe suffers because of a small sector of society. The ""root of the problem" is money. Without it there's fuck loads less to "fight" over.

There's nothing flawed about "stop whinging and stand up and do something about it".
Even a hoary old curmudgeon like me hit the streets in '81. However I somehow doubt that someone who doesn't vote would have the energy to get out and march.

You posture and complain, yet you have no respect for the democratic process, preferring to make condescending and fatuous remarks about how you would fix it.
You just know better don't, you?

You and the rest of rent a rabble should take the heed of the Prime Minister - over 1,000,000 people voted for this government, if you can get that many on your next march, we'll listen.
