And you'd rather.... they didn't protect personal deposits legally?

Only it sounds like just more of your whining, with even less than the usual excuses.

Protect money from who? Who's going to take it with rules in place eh.

Of course it does. Soft sounds drift down, not up.

The reality is that there is no protection for banking customers at all. Governments will bail banks out rather than bear the almost intolerable resulting economic collapse and leave bank cutomers swinging in the breeze. HSBC have quite simply just held the middle finger up to multiple Govts and yelled, "Suck it", at the top of their voice for the last 10 years. A change in legal entities and name changes and HQ relocation will just expand the capacity to steal, launder, lose and misappropriate money "invested" by anyone of a lesser financial status than Bernie Ecclestone, another famous thieving bastard. HSBC is one of the few corporate entities out there who actively take the low road rather than ending up there through a lack of coordination between the various arms of the same entitity or poor decision making by an investment arm.

I has a solution. Give all your money to me, my antecedents are impeccable. Honest. Seriously, dude, govt guarantees may not be as watertight as some might like, but they're a damned sight more so than any unregulated alternative.

Besides, by a stupendous stroke of good management I don't have need of the services of HSBC, so I don't give a tinker's cuss about their ethical rectitude. I can heartily recommend the same strategy to anyone wondering what to do with their surplus dosh.
