Any sensible person would be hoping for substantial subsidies for the renewable energy sector.

Correct, and such a figure would help give perspective to the fossil fuel subsidies. I'm stating the obvious here, but those subsidies are not direct, it's for things like carbon taxes, supply costs, pollution control; it's obtained by estimating the true cost compared to what is paid, not by adding up direct subsidies (which just as obviously, don't add up to 6.5% of the world's GDP).

Why should the fossil fuel sector get any subsidies?

They shouldn't, and if you read the rest of my post, it gives some perspective to that question and how it relates to the studies. Or you could just read the study in question, even the abstract might be helpful for you.
