With Trump's US tariffs going into effect last Friday, estimated to affect China by up to
approx US$50-60 billion annually, it has been interesting to see how China might retaliate.

And apart from:

1. Advising the US that tariffs are detrimental for world trade in general, and
2. Identifying certain products that are iconic US products (some of which are manufactured
in the home states of key US Congress men supporting the tariffs)

(and only to the tune of only US$3 billion), it has been "relatively quiet" on some of the main
Chinese websites the last two days. No mention of China dumping USD Treasuries (as yet).

Surely, the Chinese must have thought up some asymmetric approach, rather than chose to
compete directly in a potentially damaging trade war with the US ?

So it was with interest when I read the following:

Stating that in 2016 alone, American scrap exports to China totaled $5.6 billion and provided
US industry with 155,000 jobs. And it could also affect all 50 US states.

The US press has wasted no time in complaining how bad this decision could be (for the US).

Unforeseen consequence ? I watch the news for further such events.

While i doubt you can differentiate the difference, I'd wager that others more intelligent would be able to appreciate the less than subtle difference, between Japan and Germany spreading well known deadly pathogens such as Anthrax and Cholera and the plague. The spreading of which resulted in the deaths of 10,000’s (Some say up to 200,000 people). Compared to the US spreading of what was considered to be harmless bacteria and other markers, used only to simulate how a biological attack might spread, where 1 single person died.
