August 6th again tomorrow, and this time the 75th anniversary of the first atomic bombing in Japan.
It's quite sobering to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, particularly Hiroshima with its "Dome" and the Peace Memorial Museum. Especially recognising that despite the damage inflicted, it is estimated that only 1 kg of its 64 kg of enriched uranium used in the bomb actually went fissile.
Journalist John Pilger has provided a summary of some of the history relating to nuclear weapons, and giving recognition to another distinguished Australian investigative journalist Wilfred Burchett (who smuggled himself past US military lines and conducted his own investigation and reporting on the Hiroshima after-effects following the bombing, much to the annoyance of the US military):
https://www.counterpunch.org/2020/08...e-stop-it-now/
It's a pity that Pilger's article did not also mention the US intention to cause widespread nuclear devastation across Russian cities in the period 1946-1949 (this intention only set aside due to the USSR gaining its own nuclear weapon in 1949):

The US has contemplated the development of low yield (tactical) nuclear weapons from time to time. Since the Russians developed hypersonic missile capability more recently, the US has again stepped up its intention to develop and deploy low yield nuclear weapons, apparently somehow confident that to such missiles would not lead to a all-out nuclear war:

It's not as if they don't already know the scale of devastation likely to be caused, and the impact upon both the environment and human populations around the world:

Even a modest nuclear war between two small powers (e.g. India and Pakistan) would be sufficient to cause world-wide famine:

Looking at what masquerades as "sound government" within the US at the moment, I can't help but feel pessimistic for the future of my own children.

I see this morning that nuclear START negotiations in Vienna (between the US and Russia) may have been making some progress in the background. And that some "deal" may be imminent.

But current US politics must give Vlad a real headache. Who to publicly support?
Does he publicly support his "current US puppet" (better the puppet you know) - but who not only announced that US nuclear weapons systems were "tippy top", but threatened that "US conditions may harden" if a deal is not agreed before the election:
https://www.businessinsider.com.au/t...sagree-2020-10
Or does he support "a new US puppet" (Biden) - who has apparently indicated that he is willing to extend the existing START treaty (even without Chinese inclusion).
Who to believe ? Who to support ? Can only hope that he makes the right choice.

"The Rethinking Economics charity, which pushes for a broader application of economics, said it was "disappointing" that the prize had gone to "two white men from the global north working on auction theory".".
