Selling drugs, organising dog fights, get a grant from WINZ to buy clothes for a job interview then sell the clothes and buy dope, you name it, but it probably won't be legal. To be able to survive long term on the benefit you need to be able to hustle. The prime life skill is knowledge of every benefit assistance that's available. WINZ (or whatever it's called now) don't offer that information, you have to ask. If you don't ask, they don't offer, and you don't know to ask so... Knowledge of the system is paramount and all long termers have that in fine detail.
As for the dog fight thing, I did see one WINZ client wearing a Michael Vick football jersey. Michael Vick was a talented NFL quarter back, his career was interrupted by a conviction for dog fighting and a subsequent stretch in prison . At that time bull terriers or other big dogs were going missing hereabout.
