Isn't it nice how vindicating time and the Twitter files have been.

    Science....

    https://joannenova.com.au/2023/01/it...eaking-papers/

Disruptive science sounds like something impossible to measure, but the researchers found way to test for the arrival of new papers that replace past paradigms. Genius discoveries may still have happened, but no one picked them up.

The authors reasoned that if a study was highly disruptive, subsequent research would be less likely to cite the study’s references, and instead would cite the study itself. Using the citation data from 45 million manuscripts and 3.9 million patents, the researchers calculated a measure of disruptiveness, called the CD index, in which values ranged from –1 for the least disruptive work to 1 for the most disruptive.

And it’s a wipe-out: The CD Index fell by 90% since World War II. A similar fall occurred in patents, with an 80% decline from 1980 to 2010. The language in the papers also The verbs scientists used changed too — with older papers saying they would produce or determine things, while newer papers just improve and enhance…

It’s happening in every field of science at the same time — almost like a systematic failure
Daniel Lawler and Juliette Collen explain that this is not a case of scientists discovering everything there is to know in one area:

One theory for the decline is that all the “low-hanging fruit” of science has already been plucked. If that were the case, disruptiveness in various scientific fields would have fallen at different speeds, Park said. But instead “the declines are pretty consistent in their speeds and timing across all major fields,” Park said, indicating that the low-hanging fruit theory is not likely to be the culprit.

It’s as if there is something wrong with the incentives across the board?

Looks like the rise of Government funded GroupThink?
Since World War II governments took over the role of funding science from philanthropists. Once upon a time one guy funded another one and great things happened. Now Government funded committees that are spending other people’s money, reject the risky genius and fund the middle-of-the-road instead. New ideas don’t stand a chance against monopoly science.

    As Robert Zimmerman says:

…when you increasingly have big government money involved in research, following World War II, it becomes more and more difficult to buck the popular trends. Tie that to the growing blacklist culture that now destroys the career of any scientist who dares to say something even slightly different, and no one should be surprised originality is declining in scientific research. The culture will no longer tolerate it. You will tow the line, or you will be gone. Scientists are thus towing the line.

It's easy. If the tech is too good, jobs will be lost (AI is spectacular at the moment and could put lots of people out of a job). If the tech is designed too well, then repeat custom will be lost. As such, all discoveries must be throttled far from their potential until the market can find a way to handle the losses. It has always been that way. ROI baby, ROI... and a population that can service it.

jobs and technology ... because that's served us so well to date. A technocrat is a technocrat is a technocrat. His dig at the communist state as if he were taking a dig at communism shows just how ill educated those morons are. Technocracts, knowing nothing more than they were educated with since forever, Priceless... even better when it's being delivered as some form of intelligent satire. Shows just how gullible yer average person is.

On the fiftieth anniversary of Dark Side Of The Moon have updated their website. This has caused a flurry of angst from people upset at the band's use of a 'rainbow'.
It's very obvious that anybody upset at the band's use of a rainbow has never listened to the music but...

It isn't actually a rainbow but even if it was, DSOTM came out in 1973, several years before the rainbow was adopted as a symbol by the gay community.

Not the biggest Floyd fan - but IIRC isn't the album cover the one of the prism splitting the light into a Rainbow? Therefore it's entirely appropriate?

I wonder if the extremists ever realise that a rainbow is the supreme close up version of whiteness, as all the colours combined produce white light without any black at all....
That will spill a few soy lattes...

Have you ever seen the cover of what seems to be one of the most popular albums ever? That's exactly what it shows.

A counter intelligence FBI agent has been arrested in New York. This is has the potential to become a major news item as it apparently involves a Russian oligarch believed to have connections to Russian intelligence.

    We can but await developments.

    Update: Here we go...

All of us will be aware of the Trump classified documents drama. Most will be aware that Biden has since had his own classified documents drama which has been handled rather ineptly. The Republicans of course want an investigation of Biden's documents although the circumstances are completely different to Trump's. Now classified documents have been found in former Vice President Pence's possession.

Perhaps the US Government should contact their local library and enquire about a tracking system that actually works?

Yes exactly that’s what cracks me up. Obviously today’s nutters didn’t have space in their timetable for physics class

Classified material is the lowest security rating in any military force. Even Camp/base Regulations are Classified.

The important and real security classifications are in the " Secret" classifications (Note the plural on the word Classifications)

The primary response from the (any) military organization ... to questions asked about ANY military subject ... is simply ... "That's Classified".

Not that it's secret ... or even important for that matter ... just a blunt way of saying ... it's none of your fucking business.
