A group of hobbyists in the US say they lost contact with their balloon shortly before the Govt announced having intercepted another balloon. If the US is spending $400,000 dollars each time it shoots down a hobby balloon that can cost as little as $8.00, it may not be the Chinese who are embarrassed.

It would be cheaper to use guns than to use missiles but they want to examine the payload if any, and using guns would likely destroy the payload. So they poke a hole in the balloon with a $400,000 missile.

Yip, They explained earlier using the guns is an issue as it can also take a week for the balloon to descend. (even with a good hit.) By then it could be anywhere
Also in the case of the first one it was above the surface ceiling on a f35 by at least a 1km. But withing the specs of a F22 it seems.
The other thing is the missiles also time ie they have an expiry date out (thats when the RNZAF got to 'practice and use their sidewinders)
The missiles have already also been paid for in previous budgets as well. The US airforce need to practice to use them as well so it might as well kill two birds with one stone.

It's been going on a long time for it to be considered an accident. That the people of Israel, wherever they live on the planet, are ok with it also has rings of the same era... but hey, it's only human beings living in arguably the largest prison in the world.
