Bang on. Oz standards are tight. They ignore all other standards like ECE or TUV or DOT.

You can only buy a AS/NZ 1968 certified helmet in Oz and the cops can order you off the road if you do not have one.

That also cover visors too (I have a helmet purchased in Oz with the Red/Silver sticker on the visor as well).

There are a few helmet brands you can buy here with the Ozzy sticker if you want (Nolan jump to mind)

got a quote for $65- bucks to ship a helmet over from Oz (not sure if that was AU dollar or NZ)
may just buy an el'cheapo to get me by over here then give it away with the bike when it comes to sell...

If you are wearing a helmet that is identical to those sold elsewhere in the world and has an Oz sticker when sold in Oz, then you're OK. (this has been done to death on the local forums)
I wear helmets with US stickers and have never had a hassle - the insurance paid out on an Arai that got munted, even though it was bought in NZ and didn't have an Aus sticker.

The only trouble you'll have is, as Mr H says, if you get a copper having a down on bikes (that happens a lot, over here) and he probably won't know what he's talking about, anyway. Few of them over here seem to.........

Could you just say the chrome sticker lost its stickiness due to your sweat and with washing the lining and then eventually fell out?

The issue is the Australian Standards compliance sticker. If your helmet hasn't got one of those affixed, then potentially you're in big trouble if the constabulary apprehending you is feeling a bit sniffy or besotted with compliance. It's unlikely you would get stopped for a helmet check but not beyond the realms of possibility that once stopped for some other reason your Kiwi-bought helmet gets checked and failed because it hasn't got a little chrome sticker on it.

Argue until you're blue that your lid meets exactly the same standards as its Australian counterpart. If it hasn't got that sticker, you're shut out of luck.
Surely those stickers wear off all the time on older helmets, what do they do in that case?

They're high class stickers. Laminated foil. Great adhesive. They'd take a fair bit to get them off once affixed.

    Summary
So the Cops are trained to look for the Silver/Red sticker AS/NZS 1698 and nick you if you don't have it.
    But........
    a) Due to the TTRMA agreement between AU & NZ any helmet sold legally in NZ is legal in Oz...
    b) except in NSW where recently they have handed out Safety certifications to a private company and knocked some local hick laws to enforce it... except the cops don't and the rest of the country doesn't care.

About as clear a mud really.

No I don't have a link to it... It is mentioned in the article but as the article also mentioned the cops there only look for the sticker.. and just like cops here they aren't smart enough to argue with.
