    Hi everyone (Precursor)

I am completely new to the whole bike scene, although I have always wanted to learn how to ride. The sad thing is, is that it's taken me until 28 to realise this.

I guess you could chuck me into the 'crusier basket' as I'm not really interested in sport/race bikes (well not yet anyway).

I have been looking into getting a Suzuki Intruder (250 obviously) as my first learners bike. I was wondering if any of you 'Biker-Yodas' had any other recommendations given the style/ride I'm looking for?

    Thanks in advance!

    Nick

sit on all the bikes you can find. Even the sports style bikes. Iv heard of quite a few people who are all "yes! cruisers FTW!" and then find they dislike the riding position.

    Welcome to Kiwibiker

I do know happy intruder riders and there certainly is some pedigree behind the marque.

If you are learning and will be putting it down and making mistakes (like we all did when we were learning), why don't you start with a GN250 so as to find you feet and then trade upto an Intruder when you are more confident.

Just a thought, 'cos Intruders ain't cheap

Actually, it's interesting that you mentioned the GN250.
One of my workmates is thinking about selling his, although I think he's a little apprehensive about letting it go.

    I think you are right.
Although I can afford to get a 2nd hand Intruder now, perhaps it would be best to get used to riding first in order to get a few riding hours under my belt.

As you've said, I'm bound to make a fair few mistakes.

    Thanks for your advice!

    Helo mate- welcome here

You know that Im going to try to talk you over to the dirty side...

A good dual purpose bike will take the knocks.
You can buy bits EVERYWHERE. often off the shelf if you break it- and you will.
But you will never dent a plastic tank....

You will learn far more about riding on a trailie. gravel, grass mud, beaches, city, curbs, stairs. Than on any cruiser. -
Just as fast and capable on the highway. Adventures every weekend, trout fishing camping.

Aprillia Ducati Beemer Ducati Honda, they all have them.

I reckon that adventure bike riders get more sex. Because well... they are just sexier.

Welcome to KB, the home of many opinions.

You dont give much info about your size etc, or what sort of riding you want to do. There are lots of really wonderful learner bikes out there.

God, if I got any more I couldn't walk, and I ride a nekkid bike

Welcome to KB mate, as has been said try sitting on as many styles of bike as you can coz you'll never know what fits otherwise. My advise would be to get a bike with no fairings on it, so when it lies down on you not much gets broken

Sorry, I have to ask. Precursor to what??

    Very good point.
    I'm roughly 5'ft 9, and weigh around 88-90kgs.

I have tried sitting on quite a few sports bikes (just sitting not riding) and I have to admit that the forward 'head first' position doesn't make me feel comfortable, nor confident - to me anyway, for me it feels quite intimidating.

I have however had a couple of supervised rides on a Intruder and it felt more 'natural' - [for a lack of a better term].

Basically, what I am after is a cruiser as it suits how I like to drive (in a car).
Nothing too flash, nothing too powerful, but something which is comfortable to ride and will get me from A to B. - Basically I'm a 28 yo granny driver (take that how you want) I'm not wanting to try and break any land-speed records.

I guess I'm just a grown up kid that wants a motorbike (but nothing too powerful at this stage).

Hehe, I've used this 'alias' for a while -on other forums.
I guess, in this case my goal is to get the ball rolling (finally).

In terms of a chemical reaction, you'd need a 'precursor' to make said reaction possible.
