Interesting article that one, Puts another light on the reasons behind the unrest, the recent events just being the final straw i particularly liked the paragraph that quotes Martin Luther King Jr

The clear abuse of power by the Metropolitan Police and the auxiliary position of the government prove only that popular unrest is nothing but the outcry of those caught between a rock and a hard place. When a government slashes public spending in this way and presides over a society in which so many people feel that they have no way of improving their lives, then they will take to the streets. As Martin Luther King Jr, a figure who today’s mainstream politicians would almost universally lavish with praise, was quite right when he said, “A riot is the language of the unheard”.

We have a growing group of unheard people in this country at the moment so don't be surprised if riots happen here as well. You can only kick people down for so long eventually they well fight back when they get pushed to far.

Which is why the cops and the media and everybody else who is all-too-easily sweeping it aside as just "unruly youth" need to take another look.

Nice post. I am amongst the unheard and will be there for the riots. You just can't have declining standards of living without some form of resentment.

Getting married and having kids just means you both have to work from 6 til 6 while kids are in kindy.

Is it really a surprise us youth are all out binge drinking and looting like this? Anyone who says it's the same shit and we've seen it all before needs to get their head checked.
For a minute there I thought you were being serious. Sarcasm is hard to read online sometimes.

    Nice post.
The ease with which you can place blame on others, free yourself from responsibility for you lot in life and fabricate an excuse to riot - all in one short sentence. How exactly smashing other peoples property fixes the world and all its problems is a mystery to me.

Hmmmm, I can't help thinking it's not as simple as the media and politicians are making out.....and most of us are assuming. To suggest it's just a bunch of kids out for a good time and causing this sort of devastation for kicks is just simple minded.

Most of us haven't even experienced the type of environment and/or culture that has bred this obvious rage and resentment. Yet, we're prepared to tell 'em how to fix it....which usually just involves some sort of "Smash 'em!" statement. These aren't the kids you went to school or uni with. They are people who have grown up in ghetto's. There I said it: ghetto. It's a word that's gone out of favour in recent years as we try to pretend we live in an advanced society, but they're alive and flourishing.

    From www.dictionary.com:
    ghet·to   /ˈgɛtoʊ/ Show Spelled[get-oh]

    noun, plural -tos, -toes.
    1. a section of a city, especially a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships.
    2. (formerly, in most European countries) a section of a city in which all Jews were required to live.
    3. a section predominantly inhabited by Jews.
    4. any mode of living, working, etc., that results from stereotyping or biased treatment: job ghettos for women; ghettos for the elderly.

Sounds about right eh? In one of supposedly the greatest cities and societies of the world.

I'm not excusing their behaviour, I'm just trying to put myself in their shoes and understand their resentment. I just wonder if I'd grown up with that sort of culture with generations of resentment and disappointment if I'd be any different. Seriously, we've all seen people on here absolutely lose their rags over stupid words on a screen, something that can be forgotten 30seconds later. To assume you'd grow up and evolve into a productive well adjusted member of society under the conditions that have been fostered over there is laughable.

So how do you fix it? Fucked if I know. But surely the first step has to be acknowledging this isn't just a simple "kids having a wild time" incident. It's a complex issue and any solution will need to address policing, migration, integration, racial, political, employment etc etc etc issues that people either don't want to see or are happy to put in the too hard or unimportant basket. But given that Britain only recently quashed hereditary peerage to the House of Lords I don't really see much chance they'll understand the problem let alone come up with a solution.

    +1

Fucking up other peoples businesses and cars helps your own situation how? or does it just make you feel a bit better trying to bring someone else down?

when you see all of these muppets wearing masks, ready to give whoever a kicking, they're not trying to make up for the inequality they feel or the lack of money or whatever. They're just looking for a fight for the sake of it. Just like the football hooligans of old!
Finally the Police are talking of getting the Plastic bullets out!

Civil unrest is the medicine for the problem. If there is no unrest, nothing changes. Peaceful protest is a joke. Harsh but true- sorry. As the financial system falls apart ever more, these events will only become more frequent; so look forward to it.

People need to look deeper and see where all these behavioral problems stem from. All those naysayers with their heads in the sand chirping away need to take a second to think about what might cause this. But most of you are probably boomers quite happy to stay up on your high horse and look down in disgust I'd imagine.

I just wish these rioters could have a bit better sense of cohesion and attack government and police buildings instead- I'd be cheering them on.

its no longer a protest, they are doing it for fun. The financial part is just an excuse.
what sort of excuse do football hooligans have when they smash streets up and set fire to buildings? Its often irrelevant whether their team won or not, they are just out for the fight/thrill.
Britain has had plenty of scumbags willing to fight for no reason since the 80's!
So many people have chips on their shoulders, sort your shit out and stop blaming society and everyone else for it.
I've been there, these people have options! its just that they choose not to do anything about it.

Looting as a result of a football match is one thing, looting an entire country over different cities for no real apparent reason is another. Can you not see the difference?

These are just some of the symptoms of the sick society the boomers have left for us. These yobbos probably don't know what they are are doing it for, but they are doing it as a result of something. Don't just say it's for no reason.

Bring in the army and use 'em as friggin target practice.

The reporter used the term "recreational rioters" - send in the recreational army.

Gotta stop watching the news as the whole thing is just too aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh to listen to and watch. Terrified residents, buildings and homes destroyed.
What do you actually know about it apart from what you've been fed by the media?

What if they're people with a genuine greivance, finally pissed off enough to do stuff:

Have a look at this, I dare you, though since it conflicts with your received opinion, I doubt you will.
