I've bought a new toy

Some clues:

While it doesn't have quite the right number of wheels to qualify as a motorcycle, it certainly isn't a car.

It is 50 years old so is a vintage machine.

KoroJ use to make it fly back in the mid 1970's, though it has been repainted since then.

Top speed is only around 220 kmh, and that's pretty good for something of this age.

The same model set world records between 1959 and 1968.

It is NOT a Jantar.

Any guesses?

Its a Schleicher Ka6cr-PE glider, commonly called a K6.

I have done very little glider flying... the last time was in Nelson in a two hole Grob. Ivan Evans was PIC. Bloody loved it! Nowadays I just see them in the rear view mirror of the Pawnee.

Pussy, glider pilots have great respect for the tow pilots. You guys give up your time so we can enjoy ourselves. And you have to fly so accurately because you have another aircraft flying in formation only 30 - 40 meters behind you.

My next task is to travel to Taranaki to collect it. It's based at Norfolk, just south of New Plymouth, so my wife and I are planning on a North Island trip in early October.

TBH, I quite enjoy flying the Pawnee on towing. And it's always nice to get a "thank you" from the glider pilots. I do it just for shits and giggles.
