For his 40th, I offered my husband a static line jump voucher. Me thought: what better way to say " I love you" than by kicking him out of a plane?

It backfired when he upgraded himself to the "all by myself like a big boy" option.

The look on his face upon landing was awesome: grin from ear to ear.

I was the one who was as nervous as hell.

Man (sorry ... WOMAN) what a view ...

Solo jumps take a bit of training .. so everything is automatic.
I find that while my kids are little, I get super careful and nervous. Part of the reason I am not riding much these days. I was like that when my son was little, then I gradually relaxed when he got around 6-7.

For now, my wee girl being only 3, I'm still on high alert and unable to throw myself/ us in the path of danger without turning into a nervous wreck. It isn't worth it as I'm not enjoying it and I am likely more dangerous for lacking confidence and overeacting.

Tis just a matter of time

    Nah, he's done that already.

Besides, I've already committed myself to growing old with him. I'm not old yet, so I got to see this through first

I admire your commitment then ... I hope it lasts forever. Or even longer ...

But as for his 50th ... some places (race tracks) offer "Hot Laps" in a race car ... well worth doing.

He'll never comment on YOUR driving again ...

Agreed, and thanks. But he's already done that too bit of an adrenaline junkie my man is.

The only thing I've narrowed it down to (that he hasn't done yet, and is cool) is a ride on a Hughes 500, his favourite helicopter. But them rides are super expensive, it'll definitely have to wait til he turns 50 in a couple of years.

Did he do the accelerated free fall?

I did a static line when i was young, then did some freefalls when i got a bit older. On the way up to 10,000 ft we kicked a couple of static'ers out the door at 2000ft, man that gave me the shits. The ground was sooooo close

From 5000 feet to chute open ... about 45 seconds. Not much time to dwell on possible problems ..... after you're out the door anyway.

But hey ... whats the worst that can happen ... ???

    Nope.
30 seconds until you hit the planet, from 5k, if you do nothing.
You should have your chute open at 3000ft which means 15 seconds to do "something" (enjoy the view, do some knitting, etc, etc).

    That's a waste of a good 1,000ft of tracking.

Years ago I did a couple of static line jumps.

On the second jump the first guy out had a parachute malfunction and we all sat there watching him plummet to earth. The jump master was screaming out to him to pull his reserve (of course there was no way he was ever going to hear him) but at the very last second he managed to dump his main chute and deploy his reserve.

The jump master breathed a sigh of relief and turned to me and said "Right, you're next".

I figured the chances of it happening twice in a row were pretty slim.

Similar story, watched a fellow student roman candle followed by another jumper knocking himself out on the runway. As we get in the plane after the ambo had left the instructor says "these things come in threes". That was one long climb to 10,000ft.

"Back in the day" I had 5 five mals, 2 in a row . Use to use a motor driven Olympus OM1. Usual senario was at breakoff would follow one of the group to get some good opening sequence shots. CSO grounded me and was only allowed to use the camera when using a a paralert. First time It went off I opened immediately and was surprised how high 2,500 was. The 2 mals in a row I experienced ground rush for the 1st time and had a slow opening and used the reserve.
Last jump was over Whenuapai a military photo shoot and back to the usual story without the Paralert. Base commander was watching and timed my time under canopy and I was banned from jumping at the base.

    And that was my "Picture"
