I think you'll find that mainly within older generations and tourists. Although some do have their kids to interpret for them.

Old dickwad on Radio Live interviewed the racist tart that made the comments and asked if it would have been racist if a whitey had said the same thing.

Her answer was the no if they supported it with facts like she does.

Decided to watch Margaret Mutu tonight for a few minutes and went in prepared to get angry as usual at the radical bullshit usually put out by 'these people'. I was pleasantly surprised! She spoke eloquently and while there was passion there, it was not the rabid passion laced with over the top statements you so often see in 'these people'. (A bit like Pita Sharples.) I don't necessarily agree with all she said but if we could apply a 'racist' test to immigrants at the border that would be cool so I guess to a certain extent I can sympathise with her. Never really been a supporter of extra rights for Maori but I can support their wish to exlude people who come to our country and disrespect the indigenous people just because they are who they are. God, my great aunt would be spinning in her grave if she heard me saying that. Now she was a racist! Back in the day when Winston Peters was a high flyer in the National Party I said to her "He'll be Prime Minister one day". "Oh Richard" she said scathingly..."but he's a Maori".

[QUOTE=jazfender;1130145823]People complain about immigrants not integrating into our society but people from other cultures bring what they know in order to make a living. I think society is all the better for it.

Like the Somalian refugees that Helen took in? All they bought with them was diseases that hadn't been heard of in NZ since the 50's.

A lot of people put language differences in the too hard basket.

Why should New Zealanders have to learn the immigrants language. In NZ English is the accepted everyday language. If I moved to Mongolia I doubt the locals would go out of their way to learn English.

Eloquent, intelligent & non-rabid yes but how do you feel being described as an honored guest in your own country? I had to turn off, the under tone of the statements is blatantly discriminatory & divisive. Her perspective is that we should ALL have this knowledge & awareness to be able to get on. She might be right but unless this becomes a cornerstone of being a Kiwi, whether Pakeha, Maori, Asian or whatever that perspective will be inflammatory.
No talk of change or moving on, just using history as a weapon IMHO and putting the onus on more recent arrivals to come up to her standards.

    Complaint laid over Mutu 'racism'.

A formal complaint has been laid to the Race Relations Commissioner over comments made by academic Margaret Mutu about the need to restrict "white" immigration.

In a Fairfax Media newspaper at the weekend Professor Mutu said the number of people coming from South Africa, England and the United States should be restricted, as they bring attitudes of white supremacy and are destructive to Maori.

That outraged Nga Puhi leader David Rankin, who said the comments were racist and a step "too far".

He said: "The advice I have is that she has breached the Race Relations Act and needs to be held accountable for it".

Mr Rankin says he's written a complaint to the Race Relations Commissioner - and has included Professor Mutu's employer Auckland University in it.

"They continue to have her on the payroll", he explains, "and have come out to support and endorse her racist comments".

David Rankin's letter to Race Relations Commissioner Joris De Bres

    Tena koe Mr De Bres,

This letter relates to recent statements made by Margaret Mutu of Auckland University regarding immigration by 'white' migrants as she put it.

Ms Mutu, in her public statements about immigration - particularly her claim that the immigration of 'white' people to New Zealand should be reduced because they are allegedly racist, has been demonstrating discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, and ethnic and national origins.

I would there for like to formally lodge my complaint against Ms Mutu's comments and request that your office investigate them.

I would also like you to apply a similar investigation into Auckland University, as they had released a statement supporting her in her comments and they continue to employ her.

    Thank you
    David Rankin

I actually agree with your whole post but this was the bit that I took exception to as well when I listened to her being interviewed by walrus.

I thought it was condescending and a not-too-subtle needle (done in sugary words). I wonder if Maori were "honoured guests" of the people already living in pre-European New Zealand when they first arrived? Oh wait...

Uh yeah that's called compassion, bro? You know, that trait that most humans should have towards their fellow man?

The trait that kiwis are generally quite proud of, the assistance to a brother in need and saying "need a hand, mate?".

What the fuck is wrong with you?

I didn't even suggest that New Zealanders should have to learn the immigrants language.

I wonder if there is anyone called "Ray Challist" in NZ, imagine the mileage he could get out of that especially if he was one of those who choose to be a minority.

They must have been honoured guests...cos they bloody ate them or raped them or raped them then ate them.
