    Clubmans for beginners

    Hey guys n girls!

So, i've decided to give racing a go and have been told (in the general bike ravings section) that I can enter my gs1200ss in the clubmans class. I had a look at the auckland motorcycle club clubmans section but am still wondering if someone could explain to me whether my bike would be alright to begin with in that class (would it go into the open class?) and what I would need to get started. How does the race licence system work? etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I have also been told it is better to sell the gs and get a pro twin or f3 650. What do you guys think?

    Cheers!

Buy something with some cornering clearance, quick! GS1200 Esses are slow, heavy, and shit. As soon as you look at a fast turn at a racetrack, you'll wonder why the fuck you bothered. Chop it in on a nice GSXR1100 or something, you will thank me later,

The GS will put you hospital before you can have any fun. Keep it for the road and buy something F3 ish for playin on. Club membership is reqd for a licence. Join a bike club and they will steer you to MNZ for a licence.. You could try a day license to wet your whistle. Pay your money and away you go. Welcome to the best fun you can have with out having to tell her you'll respect her in the morning.

There's also the Hyosung Cup, a 250cc class being run this year by AMCC, could be worth investigating, as it's supposed to be a source of cheap racing.

    Pretty much what they said.
The unfortunate side of going 'racing' on bikes like yours is that fundamentally you end up having an expensive trackday, not a raceday.

Clubmans is the place to start, and you can start on any bike you please, but a bike that is track oriented rather than road oriented will give you a better outcome.

www.vicclub.co.nz has some how to get started tips.

You need proper track oriented riding gear and you can (if AMCC offer them, I don't know if they do or not as clubs are not required to do so) buy a day licence, but you must be a club member to get any licence, day or otherwise.

A couple of AMCC ART days or even California Superbike School levels prior would also help you out.

If you have a couple of bucks, why not get a Streetstock or Pro-lite bike? An RG150/KR150 is not so dear these days and you can learn heaps in a short period of time and then move on. Or even cough, cough, a bucket bike and race that for a little while.

As said, get a Street Stock, or better yet, a Pro-Lite.
They will teach you how to corner properly.
You won't be flying at the corner at 250k wondering if you should brake yet... then braking too early anyway.....
I am a little biased, and would say get a Ninja 250, but in saying that, you could always ask "Billy" on here if he still has the Hyosung for sale.

Don't put the GS on the track, seriously! As said, it will be an expensive Track Day, and no racing really, as every other bike will be in a different class (either more race orientated, more powerful, less powerfull etc etc....), with no measurable results.

Mate, go Bucket Raceing. Learn your racecraft and make your 'beginner' cockups at speeds less likely to kill you or others around you and move on from there (unles you get the Bucket bug and choose to stay as many others have).
You can get an FXR150 ready to race for under $1500. The entry fees are cheap and there are lots of meetings. You won't get a better bang for your buck in anyother class.

Can't argue with that one but hardly a good beginner racer bike.
