Motorcycle Rider Improvement Day - Taranaki - Sunday 18 September

Roadsafe Taranaki together New Plymouth Injury Safe and ACC are hosting a Motorcycle Rider Improvement Day on Sunday 18 September at the Kartsport Taranaki Kart Track, Waitara.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of 25 riders.

Do they teach wheelies, stoppies and getting your knee down at the go-cart track?

What sort of skills are they teaching? what's the format? What's the background of the instructors? How will they handle the differing skill/experience levels amongst 25 riders?

I read the PDF file, and the info wasn't there. Yes I could call up, find out and post the answers here, but thought the OP may know and could just fill it in.

No, I just reckon that rider training is a good thing. Once the BMW is back, I'll be seeing Tricia (slofox had those posts saying she was really good). I also like the skills stuff you did, finding tarmac up here etc, goes into the too hard basket, but I do like the idea of REALLY being able to handle the bike.

Sort of like the cop stuff as well, like taking off with the bike in full lock etc.

Tempting, but my BMW isn't back from the USA yet, otherwise I will do that at some point...

On the track we will be going over braking, counter-steering, cornering. The kart track is not conducive to high speeds, so it is more about technique.

The 25 riders will be split into four even groups: two will be on the track, one group will be covering theory in the 'classroom' and one going over maintenance, bike set up etc. After one hour the groups not on the track switch.
After two hours (from the start), the groups on the track move off track, while the two groups that have been doing the theory, move out to the track.

The instructors all have a wealth of experience, both individually and collectively.
Three of them are 'I' endorsed, one is an assessor for IAM, one has been running similar training days for 15+ years.
More importantly there are all passionate about rider training and have excellent delivery techniques that cater to all experience levels - this is not a dictorial session, more an informative approach to heighten rider awareness of the skills and issues that face riders every time they venture out.

The afternoon concludes with a road ride that we will stop at different points on and discuss the hazards that are/could be present.

The whole day is about getting feedback from the attendees about what their views/issues/weaknesses/strengths are and discussing these with the rest of the group. This way more experienced riders get to share their knowledge, less experienced riders get to ask questions, with the trainers explaining the theory behind the knowledge.

The practical side sounds really good.

Shame there's no knee down stuff on the track, it looks almost as long as the old Taupo track.

Is there any chance that people can come and just observe at the track, to see whether they may want to come along at a future date?

We split one person into 4, easy really

...you can certainly come and have a look.
