Trade in value can have more to do with the margin in the bike you are purchasing than the actual value of the trade.
It is common for a dealer to 'over-trade' to secure your business. For example, the ZX you just looked at may only have had $1000-1500 profit in it for the dealer, so he has offered you the actual wholesale value for your trade.
The shops in Auckland you visited may have had a $3000 margin, so they have effectively offered you a $1500 discount by way of making your trade price more attractive.
Depending on the mileage on the 'storm and any recon that needs to be taken into account, $5k sounds about right to me.
When searching you need to use different terms eg; "VTR1000", "VTR 1000", "Firestorm" to find all of them. There are lots for less than $7k though they do seem to be priced high at the moment. They won't sell at $7k, there are some that have been on there more than a year.
But, as mentioned, it's not the price a dealer will value your bike at or his bike at that matters, it's the bit in the middle that you have to pay.
5K from a dealer isnt a bad price id say, the market for big bikes isnt too good at the moment i recently sold a 2005 vtr1000 for $5250 and that was a struggle had pretty much no interest in it, id wait till summer and sell the vtr privately then pay cash for the zx when you find one unless you just want a quick trade you usually get a bit screwed with a trade in
